Easy English expression rehashed. Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English! Coach Shane here.
How you doing this Saturday? I hope you're doing great.
Great. I love today's video or rather podcast because it's like the same thing. but it's really not.
So you need to listen carefully. You're going to learn something.
Let's go back. In time. It's two words.
Actually, it's three words that are very confusing for people.
Maybe... Or maybe... What? You know, may, B-M-A-Y, space, B-E.
May be, and... Maybe, M-A-Y-B-E, as one word.
When do we say maybe? When do we say maybe?
Now this can be confusing. When you see the two words separately.
May be. Two distinct words. It's the same thing as might be.
Shane might be American. I'm not sure. Shane may be American.
I'm not sure. When you're not sure about something, you can say might be.
And you can also say may be. And if we say it fast, Shane may be American.
I'm not sure. So, when do we say maybe as one word?
I'll be there maybe tomorrow. I'll be there possibly tomorrow.
I'm not exactly sure, but I think possibly I will be there tomorrow.
I will be there possibly tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow.
So maybe as one word is an adverb. Other possibilities?
Possibly. And even perhaps. may be as two words is the same as might be. and I guess in some situations could be, maybe even would be, might be possible too.
Okay? So might be and possibly. Maybe.
And maybe. Let's check out a dialogue. I hope you're not busy next maybe.
You may be pregnant. Maybe pregnant? Maybe.
Wow, shocking news. That was... Chinette's cousin B.
Yes, her name is Bea, B-E-A, Bea. It's an American name, Beatrice Bea.
And the doctor, the guy speaking was a doctor.
The doctor said, I hope you're not busy next week.
May be. Next May, you know, January, February, March, April, May...
B is her name. So, you know, like, I hope you're not busy next...
May Shane. I hope you're not busy next May B.
That's my humor. Why? Why next May? What's happening?
The doctor says you may die. Be pregnant.
Now, is that one word or two words? You may be pregnant.
You possibly... Or, you might be pregnant.
Yes, absolutely. Grammatically, it must be two words.
You might... Be pregnant. May be pregnant.
Might be pregnant. And then the doctor says, maybe, possibly, it is possible, perhaps.
And B says how? Well, I think she knows how.
I'm sure she knows how. Unless she's not pregnant and she just suddenly got a big tummy.
That's possible. If you eat too many beans, you get lots of gas and then poof.
Boy. could have problems. Beans and beer.
That's a dangerous combination. Even guys. who eat too many beans and drink too many beer, those guys look pregnant.
Yeah. All right. Yeah. So anyway, may be.
Two words, might be, could be. Maybe, One word, possibly.
So if you're confused, just look at the sentence and make a substitution. which is grammatically correct.
Possibly, is that right? Or might be, is that correct?
Then you'll know which maybe to use. The one word maybe or the two word maybe.
I hope that helps. Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
I hope you're not busy next maybe. You may be pregnant.
Maybe pregnant? Maybe. I hope you're not busy next maybe.
You may be pregnant. Maybe pregnant? Maybe.
