Easy English expression rehashed. Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English! Hey everybody, how's your Wednesday going?
It's hump day, middle of the week. It's a hot day where I live.
But you know what? Good news for me. After Sunday, the weather's going to cool off a lot, they say.
So I'm excited about that. we have a fantastic e-cubed expression I want you to check it out listen to it and use it The best way to learn English is to see something being used and then to use it yourself.
Here we go. Let's go back in time. Today's expression is very good.
I might as well do something. You might as well do something.
We might as well go someplace different.
She might as well verb. They might as well verb.
Shane might as well verb. John might as well verb.
Sue might as well do something. This is such a great pattern.
But when? When? Do you use this pattern?
Might as well do something is used. When you're looking for something to do or you are recommending. that somebody do something But there's not a lot of enthusiasm or excitement.
It's just a simple idea. It's not important.
It's not too exciting. It's not a great idea.
It's simply an activity that you are suggesting.
So for example, How many of you enjoy doing dishes?
Do you like washing dishes? Yes, some of you might enjoy washing dishes.
I don't. I don't hate washing dishes, but I don't look forward to washing dishes.
And washing dishes isn't impossible. Porton.
Yes, if you have no dishes, then you have to wash them, but it's not super important. while I'm rendering the podcast, what should I do?
I have about 10 minutes. Hmm. I might as well wash dishes.
It gives me something to do. It's not a waste of time.
It's a little bit useful. Instead of washing dishes, what else could I do?
Well, if I had a television, I could say, eh, I might as well watch TV.
There's nothing else to do. I have no important jobs to do.
So I might as well watch TV. Now we can say this with activities but we can also say it with food.
Sometimes thinking about a menu can be very difficult and stressful for some people.
Well, check out today's dialogue. What should we eat tonight?
I don't know. Hmm. We might as well eat hamburgers.
Yeah. Might as well. We are Americans. Yep, all Americans love eating hamburgers, as I'm sure all of you know.
Probably not all Americans. I'm sure there are many vegetarians out there who like tofu burgers.
Some people might not like beef and they have turkey burgers.
And some people might not like burgers at all.
I don't know. But yes, it is a traditional American food.
And especially for lunchtime. It's nothing special.
It's just something to eat. So what should we have for lunch?
Eh, might as well have hamburgers. Let's just go have hamburgers.
Nothing too special, nothing too expensive, nothing too... fancy, just regular, simple McDonald's hamburgers. or a little bit more expensive, Burger King.
That's the idea. Might as well do something.
It's a great pattern, and don't be confused with should not.
Do something. There is a difference. Now listen to this.
If you have a friend who's interested in studying English...
You might as well tell him about my classes.
But wait, you might as well tell them about my classes.
Not a lot of energy. Not a lot of enthusiasm.
What about... You should tell him about my classes.
Yes, that expression definitely has more energy, more enthusiasm in it.
So remember, might as well and should have a very different nuance.
Not always, but usually. So how do you learn this nuance?
Of course, listen to my podcast, watch my videos.
Pay attention to American TV shows. Pay attention to movies and see how.
Americans use these expressions. That's the best way to learn.
Okay? All right, let's listen to the dialogue two more times.
What should we eat tonight? I don't know.
Hmm. We might as well eat hamburgers. Yeah.
Might as well. We are Americans. What should we eat tonight?
I don't know. Hmm. We might as well eat hamburgers.
Yeah. Might as well. We are Americans. Thanks so much for listening.
