Easy English Expression, rehashed!
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
T -G -I -F, thank God it's Friday.
Coach Shane here. What do you do on a Friday night?
For me, it's, you know, it's not the end of the week because Saturday and Sunday are usually busy for me.
But anyway, it's Friday, and what I like to do on Friday night, so far, I mean, as of July 2025, I like to drink scotch. It's like whiskey, but it's scotch, and I love to drink scotch, but I like it a certain way with ice.
Now, yesterday we studied to be on the rocks.
Yeah, great expression.
Today, it almost sounds the same, but it's very different.
So listen carefully to today's expression.
Let's go back in time.
So two days ago, we studied smooth sailing.
Yesterday, we studied the opposite.
What was that expression?
Very good. On the rocks.
How was your relationship?
Everything is smooth sailing.
How was your relationship?
confessionship. It's on the rocks.
Very, very good expressions.
But there is another definition of on the rocks, and that is today's expression.
I was lucky tonight.
I went to my parents' house for dinner.
And I don't know why, but my dad was in a really good mood.
And when my dad is is very happy he offers me a little tiny glass of whiskey it's very expensive whiskey my dad rarely drinks whiskey only when he's feeling especially good and he offered me some tonight and he said do you want it straight or on the rocks and I was thinking oh my god that's perfect Perfect, because that is what I'm going to do for today's expression.
It was yesterday's expression, and it's also today's expression.
If you order whiskey or any other kind of alcohol, even Coca -Cola, it's possible at a bar, and you have it on the rocks, it means with ice.
So if you go to McDonald's and you say Hello, I'd like a Coca -Cola on the rocks They might not understand you It sounds really goofy On the rocks is used with alcohol But hopefully every American would understand that expression in any situation And it's funny When I was a kid I used to ask my mom for 7 -Up on the rocks I thought it was cool yes i liked my soda with ice let's check out the dialogue whiskey on the rocks please and for you coke on the rocks we don't say that we just say with ice oh yeah once again you can say coke on the rocks and probably the bartender or the waiter would would understand you.
But it goes with whiskey and not just whiskey.
It could be tequila, uh, beer on the rocks.
That sounds terrible.
Wine on the rocks. Sacre bleu.
That would be probably not that good.
Vodka on the rocks.
Definitely. So I know many of you do not drink alcohol.
Okay. There are several young people or maybe your religion, or you just don't like alcohol.
Well, yeah, you might not use this expression.
However, if you're watching an American movie or an American television program, a very good chance that you will hear this expression.
And now you know. So if somebody orders a whiskey on the rocks, that means they want their whiskey with some ice.
If they order their whiskey straight, that means they want their whiskey with no ice.
You got it? Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
Whiskey on the rocks, please.
And for you? Coke on the rocks.
We don't say that. We just say with ice.
Oh. Oh. Whiskey on the rocks, please.
And for you? Coke on the rocks.
We don't say that. We just say with ice.
Oh. Thanks so much for listening.
