Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is...
It's a great expression for guessing somebody's age.
For example, in my case, how old?
By listening to my voice, how old do you think I am?
Do you think I'm 30 -something?
Maybe early 30s? mid -30s, late 30s...isn't that great?
I just gave you four really useful expressions.
Once again, thirty -something.
Let's focus on that.
30 -something means you could be 30 years old.
31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39.
You could be all the way up to 39.
usually if we say he's 30 something we're probably thinking between 33 37 right in that area so that is also called the mid 30s mid mid 30s the middle 30s the early 30s e a r ly early 30s 30 31 32 mid 30s 33 34 35 36 37 yeah 33 37 those are tough ones late 30s 37 38 39 and that's the idea.
So how old are you?
Now this is very useful especially for women because women don't like to, well usually don't like to tell people their age so they prefer a general number.
Now me, I don't care.
Everybody probably knows how old I am.
I'm 46, so I'm in my mid 40s.
What about you? Are you in your mid 30s?
Are you in your late 30s?
Are you in your early 50s?
Are you in your early 70s?
I have students from all ages.
However, most of my DDM students, they're all professionals.
I think most of them are mid 40s, late 40s, in their 50s, 50 something.
40 something, 50 something is the typical DDM student.
Of course I have 20 somethings.
I even have teens. Yeah, I've got some kids, some punks, 20 somethings.
I've got three DDM students who are in their 70s, their 70 something.
Isn't that awesome?
I don't think I have anyone in their 80s." So it's a great, great expression.
When you're guessing somebody's age.
And also the cost of something.
But first, let's listen to a dialogue.
How old is Shane? I think he's 30 something.
No, maybe late 20s.
I think mid 30s. Early 30s.
Tops. Oh we had yesterday's expression in there.
So how old is Shane?
I think he's 30 -something, mid -30s is the second guy's guess.
The other guy thinks maybe late 20s.
Well if he's in his 30s early 30s tops.
Great expressions. By the way 30 something, 30 -something.
Early 30s? Now some people just make it two words.
Some people type early dash 30s.
Mid 30s most people type mid dash 30s.
Late 20s or late 30s once again late 30s some people write it as two words and some people put a dash, a hyphen in there.
So there's a couple of different ways that you can write this out but this is not really written English it's spoken English which is what E cubed is all about now let's talk about money how much is that doughnut I think it's one something in that case a dollar something a dollar twenty five dollar seventy five a dollar fifty I don't know how much is that house oh that house is nice I think it's 150 something 150 thousand dollars 157 thousand dollars something like that.
So you're not exactly sure of the amount but approximately it's one something.
A dollar something.
A hundred and fifty something.
A hundred and fifty thousand something dollars.
That's the idea. So you can use this something in other situations when you're guessing, you know an amount.
But most commonly it's used with age.
Okay? Let's check out that dialogue two more times how old is Shane well I think he's 30 something no maybe late 20s I think mid 30s early 30 steps how old is shame well I think he's 30 something.
No, maybe late twenties.
I think mid thirties.
Early thirties. Taps!
Thanks so much for listening.
