📋 Summary

The Tragic Disappearance of Jolene Cummings

In May 2018, the peaceful community of Fernandina Beach, Florida, was shaken by the disappearance of 34-year-old Jolene Cummings. A devoted mother and popular hairstylist at Tangles Hair Salon, Jolene’s failure to pick up her children for the weekend—an act described as "far from normal"—immediately raised red flags for her family. As Detective Wayne Harrington of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office began the investigation, he noted the absence of any digital or financial activity, suggesting that Jolene had "vanished right after leaving the salon."

Investigating the Usual Suspects

Initial suspicions fell upon Jolene’s estranged husband, Jason Cummings, who was engaged in a contentious custody battle with her. However, after a thorough investigation, including a review of his cell phone and vehicle, detectives corroborated his alibi and cleared him of involvement. Attention then shifted to Jolene’s new boyfriend, Jason Gee. Gee had a criminal history and was on the run from an active arrest warrant. While he admitted to a recent domestic dispute with Jolene, police found no evidence linking him to her disappearance, essentially forcing investigators to return to "square one."

The Bizarre Co-worker and a Surveillance Break

Investigators turned their focus to Tangles Hair Salon, where they learned of a strained relationship between Jolene and a recently hired co-worker, Jennifer Seibert. Seibert’s behavior was immediately suspicious; she left a "bizarre" voicemail claiming she could not be involved in the investigation due to a stalker ex-husband.

The case broke wide open when police discovered Jolene’s SUV abandoned near a Home Depot. Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station captured a person dressed in all black parking the vehicle at 1:00 a.m. The individual was identified as Jennifer Seibert. Notably, the footage showed Seibert with visible "scratches on her face," which investigators suspected were "defensive wounds."

The Forensic Nightmare and the True Identity

Armed with a search warrant, forensic teams processed the salon using Luminol, revealing that the entire space was a "homicide scene." The amount of blood discovered indicated a violent struggle and a "massive cleanup effort." When Seibert was finally apprehended, she was found living out of her car, concealing injuries with makeup. A search of her vehicle revealed a hair salon kit containing scissors stained with Jolene’s blood, as well as receipts for an electric fillet knife, ammonia, and trash bags—items indicating a gruesome disposal of remains.

During transport, the suspect dropped a bombshell: "My name is not Jennifer Seibert. It’s Kimberly Kessler." Investigators discovered that Kessler was a fugitive who had been living under various aliases for over 25 years. The motive was clear: Jolene had confronted Kessler, telling her, "You’re not who you say you are. You’re fake," which Kessler viewed as a threat to her secret life.

Justice and the Search for Closure

Despite the defense’s claims regarding Kessler’s mental competency—citing erratic behavior like "flinging feces" and a hunger strike—the jury remained unconvinced. In December 2021, Kimberly Kessler was found guilty of first-degree murder and grand theft auto, receiving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

Although the case concluded with a conviction, the tragedy remains incomplete. Jolene Cummings' body has never been found, and Detective Harrington continues to hold onto the hope that he might provide closure for her grieving family. The case stands as a haunting reminder of how a life can be extinguished by a predator hiding in plain sight.
