Central to this is Reward Prediction Error—the brain’s way of comparing the dopamine experienced vs. the dopamine expected. If a reward is exactly what we expected, dopamine returns to baseline. If it exceeds expectations, we get a larger peak. If it fails, the baseline drops significantly, leading to decreased motivation.

Foundational Tools for a Healthy Baseline

To maintain a high level of motivation, you must prioritize your dopamine baseline through foundational practices:

  1. Quality Sleep: Essential for restoring dopamine reserves.
  2. Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR/Yoga Nidra): These protocols can increase dopamine baseline levels by up to 65%.
  3. Morning Sunlight: Viewing sunlight early in the day triggers a dopamine-related cascade and sets your circadian rhythm.
  4. Exercise: Regular physical activity maintains elevated baseline dopamine levels.
  5. Nutrition: Tyrosine, an amino acid found in various foods, is the rate-limiting enzyme for dopamine synthesis.

Overcoming Procrastination: The Friction-as-Reward Strategy

Procrastination often occurs when we are stuck in a dopamine trough and lack the motivation to initiate effort. Instead of waiting for motivation to return, Huberman suggests a counterintuitive approach: steepen the trough.

By engaging in an effortful, "painful" (but safe) activity—such as deliberate cold exposure or a brief, intense meditation session—you force your body to recover from that dip more rapidly. By intentionally leaning into limbic friction (the internal resistance to doing hard things), you effectively reset your dopamine system.

Ultimately, the goal is to reach a state where effort itself becomes the reward.
