The Anatomy of a Doomsday Tragedy: Unraveling the Vallow-Daybell Murders

The Disappearance and the Initial Investigation

The investigation into the gruesome deaths of J.J. Vallow and Tylee Ryan began not with a discovery of a crime scene, but with a simple "welfare check" requested by J.J.’s grandmother. Detective Ray Hermosillo of the Rexburg Police Department recalls being the first point of contact after reports surfaced that seven-year-old J.J. was missing. What appeared to be a routine inquiry quickly spiraled into a multi-agency investigation involving local, state, and federal authorities, as the mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, and her new husband, Chad Daybell, consistently provided evasive answers and blatant lies to law enforcement.

The Cult of the Firstborn and Extremist Rhetoric

As detectives dug deeper into the lives of Lori and Chad, they uncovered a radicalized world defined by what Chad Daybell described as his "Church of the Firstborn." Chad, a failed fiction writer, had gained a cult-like following by preaching about the "coming apocalypse," "near-death experiences," and the ability to see "the other side of the veil."

Perhaps most chilling was the testimony provided by Ian Pawlowski, whose wife (Lori’s niece) had been indoctrinated into these beliefs. He revealed that the group believed in "zombies that walk the earth"—individuals whose spirits had been replaced by dark entities. According to this warped ideology, the only way to "release the spirit" was to kill the physical body. This belief system provided the twisted moral justification for the murder of J.J. and Tylee, who were labeled as "dark" by the couple.

A Pattern of Suspicious Deaths

The investigation soon expanded beyond the missing children to include a string of suspicious deaths surrounding the couple. These included the shooting death of Lori’s previous husband, Charles Vallow, by her brother Alex Cox (claimed as self-defense), and the sudden, initially-ruled "natural" death of Chad’s wife, Tammy Daybell, just weeks before he and Lori married in Hawaii. Shortly after Tammy’s body was exhumed and found to have suspicious tissue damage, Alex Cox himself died under mysterious circumstances, effectively silencing a key accomplice.

The Grim Discovery

Digital forensics proved to be the turning point. By tracking the geolocations of Alex Cox’s cell phone, investigators identified his presence in Chad Daybell’s backyard on the exact mornings following the last known "proof of life" for both J.J. and Tylee.

On June 9, 2020, authorities executed a search warrant on the Daybell property. Detective Hermosillo vividly describes the horrific reality: J.J.’s body was found in a shallow grave, wrapped in plastic and duct tape, while Tylee’s remains were found in a pet cemetery, having been "chopped up and mutilated" and burned. The autopsies confirmed the brutality of their deaths, with J.J. showing signs that he was conscious during the initial stages of his asphyxiation.

Motive: Greed or Zealotry?

While the defense attempted to frame the actions within the context of religious extremism, the prosecution successfully argued that the motives were far more mundane. Neither Lori nor Chad had a verifiable source of income; they were effectively living off the Social Security benefits intended for J.J. and the life insurance proceeds from Tammy Daybell’s death. The case was ultimately a story of two individuals who wanted to be together and were willing to commit "violent lengths" to eliminate anyone who stood in their way.

Conclusion: The Face of Evil

In 2023, Lori Vallow Daybell was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy, receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Chad Daybell, the self-proclaimed prophet, was later sentenced to death.

Detective Hermosillo notes that the most "eye-opening" aspect of the case was the realization that evil does not always look like a monster. Lori and Chad appeared as "normal people," blending into society while hiding a capacity for extreme cruelty. The legacy of this case remains a harrowing reminder of how easily manipulation and unchecked narcissism can lead to the destruction of the most vulnerable, leaving behind a trail of lives forever altered.
