📋 Summary

Donkey Business: A Lesson in Greed and Cleverness

Introduction: The Contrast of Neighbors

In the latest episode of Circle Round, titled "Donkey Business," host Rebecca Shear presents a narrative inspired by traditional trickster tales from Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Europe. The story centers on two neighbors: Carmela, a kind but unfortunate farmer, and Enzo, a wealthy but remarkably "sulky and surly" individual. While Carmela struggles with failing crops and lost livestock, Enzo thrives, yet he remains entirely devoid of empathy or generosity, famously telling Carmela, "I work hard for what I have... I have neither the desire nor the time to do favors for beggars like you."

The First Trick: The Donkey’s "Treasure"

After Enzo cruelly rejects her plea for a small loan, Carmela decides to use her "wits" to teach her "grumpy, greedy" neighbor a lesson. She devises a clever ruse involving her old donkey, Luigi. By applying a "dab of honey" to the donkey’s rear end, she attaches a single silver coin. When she leads Luigi to graze on Enzo's lawn, she orchestrates a situation where the coin appears to be a natural deposit left by the donkey.

Enzo, blinded by his own avarice, immediately assumes the donkey is a "silver mine." His greed overcomes his initial hostility, leading him to offer an exorbitant price for the animal: "300 silver coins plus one half of my latest harvest." Carmela accepts the deal, securing her financial future while leaving Enzo with a donkey that produces nothing but hay.

The Second Trick: The Money Tree

When Enzo inevitably realizes he has been swindled, he confronts Carmela in a rage. However, Carmela is prepared. She introduces a second layer to her plan by pointing out a "money tree" in her yard—a sapling she has decorated with the very coins she extracted from Enzo the previous day. Enzo, again failing to exercise any critical judgment due to his overwhelming desire for easy wealth, is immediately captivated, calling the tree "miraculous."

He agrees to let Carmela keep the initial payment if she gifts him the tree. Carmela warns him that the tree requires patience, telling him, "I promise, you will get what you deserve." Enzo spends months obsessively watering a standard tree, waiting for it to sprout coins, until he finally realizes the depth of his foolishness.

Conclusion: The Lesson Learned

Ultimately, Enzo learns the hard way that his selfishness and stinginess led only to his own downfall. The story concludes on a note of moral redemption; Enzo realizes that after being "anything but neighborly," he was destined to get "exactly what he deserved: Nothing." This realization prompts a change in his character, as he finally embraces the importance of being "kinder and more generous to others." Carmela, meanwhile, uses her hard-earned money to restore her farm, proving that while kindness is a virtue, a sharp wit can be a powerful tool against those who refuse to lend a hand.
