📋 Summary

The Unexpected Tragedy in Phi Phi Island

In June 2012, two sisters from Quebec, Canada—25-year-old Noemi Belanger and her 20-year-old sister Audrey—arrived in Thailand for a dream vacation. After weeks of traveling through Vietnam, they reached Phi Phi Island, hoping to celebrate the end of their school year. Noemi, acting as the protective older sister, was initially exhausted and cautious, even checking their hotel bed for "bed bugs" to ensure the room was pristine. However, the sisters soon met two Brazilian men they had befriended earlier, leading to a night of partying that would ultimately end in their mysterious deaths.

The "4x100" Cocktail and Initial Theories

The sisters joined their companions at a beachfront bar, where they were introduced to a local concoction known as "4x100." These large buckets contained a mixture that the locals claimed was special to the region. While Noemi was initially hesitant, the peer pressure and the sight of other tourists consuming the drink led her to try it. After a night of dancing, the sisters returned to their hotel rooms at different times, accompanied by the Brazilian men. Three days later, housekeeping discovered their bodies surrounded by vomit. Thai authorities initially suspected alcohol poisoning, but the presence of "dried blood on the girls' gums and also under their fingernails" suggested a more violent or unusual cause, prompting a deeper investigation.

The Flawed Investigation and the Search for Answers

Thai police, led by Lieutenant Colonel Rat Somboon, faced criticism for their handling of the case. They identified the two Brazilian men through security footage but, by the time they reached out via Interpol, the men had already returned to Brazil. The men reported that they had also been "totally sick, vomiting ill" for two days following their encounter with the sisters, which led investigators to briefly consider food poisoning. When reports indicated the presence of DEET (a mosquito repellent ingredient) in the girls' systems, the Thai police officially concluded the deaths were an "accidental DEET poisoning" caused by the "4x100" drinks. The families, however, were outraged by the lack of communication and the seemingly lazy conclusion that failed to explain why the sisters died while the men survived.

The Horrifying Truth: Phosphine Gas

Dissatisfied with the Thai investigation, the Canadian government commissioned a second autopsy by coroner René Roussel. While Roussel confirmed the presence of DEET, she determined it was not a lethal dose. Her subsequent research uncovered a chilling pattern: between 2009 and 2015, at least 20 other tourists had died under remarkably similar circumstances. The common denominator was not food or drink, but the hotel rooms themselves.

It was discovered that the hotel had been using "phosphine gas"—a highly toxic pesticide—to treat bed bugs in the rooms. This practice is strictly illegal, yet it was being used to hide infestations. The sisters and their companions had been breathing in this lethal gas while sleeping in their beds. The men survived because they left the room earlier, but the sisters, who remained in the contaminated environment for a longer duration, succumbed to the toxic exposure. Despite the discovery of this systemic negligence, no one has ever been held accountable for the deaths of Noemi and Audrey, leaving a permanent scar on a case that serves as a grim warning about the hidden dangers lurking in international travel.
