  3. Live Ostrich Experiment: Finally, the researchers used a modern-day ostrich as a stand-in for the Caudipteryx. By attaching a harness with motion sensors and artificial wings to the ostrich, they observed that the wings helped "counteract or lessen the weight" of the bird, allowing it to lift itself slightly off the ground more efficiently.

The experiments suggest that the flapping motion of wings may have originally evolved as an aid to running fast, rather than initially serving the purpose of flight.
