The Delivery Debate: Asteroids vs. Comets

If Earth started dry, the water must have been delivered from elsewhere. For decades, the debate centered on two primary candidates: comets and asteroids.

  • The Case for Comets: Early theories favored comets, often described as "big, dirty snowballs in space." Because they are rich in ice, it seemed logical they were the primary delivery vehicles.
  • The Isotopic Clue: The scientific turning point came from analyzing the "deuterium to hydrogen (D to H) ratio." Deuterium is a heavy form of hydrogen. By comparing the D to H ratios of Earth's water to those found in comets and asteroids, scientists discovered a mismatch with comets. Instead, the ratios in "carbonaceous chondrites"—asteroids rich in both carbon and water—closely matched Earth's water signature.

This suggests that the gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn, likely played a chaotic role in Earth’s history. Through "dynamical simulations," scientists have shown that the gravitational turbulence of these massive planets could have "flung" water-rich asteroids from the outer solar system inward to collide with the young Earth.

A New Contender: Internal Generation

While the delivery hypothesis remains strong, a new, compelling theory has emerged: perhaps Earth generated its own water. This hypothesis posits that water was created during the planet's infancy when Earth was a "magma ocean" surrounded by a thick, oppressive atmosphere of hydrogen gas.

In this model, the iron oxides within the molten magma reacted with the hydrogen atmosphere to "rip the oxygen off of the iron oxide," effectively synthesizing water. While previously considered purely theoretical, recent laboratory experiments have provided evidence for this. Using a "diamond anvil cell," researchers squeezed iron oxide and hydrogen between two diamonds at extreme pressures and temperatures, successfully demonstrating that water can indeed be produced through these chemical reactions.

Future Implications

This debate is far from settled, but the implications are vast. As Wong notes, the future of this research lies in obtaining better isotopic measurements of asteroids and observing exoplanets. By identifying "watery worlds" in other solar systems, scientists hope to distinguish whether water is typically delivered from the outer reaches of a system or if it is an intrinsic feature formed during a planet's birth. Ultimately, solving this mystery will provide a clearer picture of how common life-sustaining environments are in our vast universe.
