📋 Summary

The Shadow: A Tragic Case of Somnambulism

The first narrative, "The Shadow," explores the devastating consequences of sleepwalking (somnambulism). Brian Thomas, a 59-year-old man, was enjoying a peaceful getaway in Wales with his wife, Christine, when he experienced a violent nightmare. In his dream, he believed an intruder was attacking his wife. Driven by instinct, Brian fought off the "attacker," only to awaken and realize he had strangled his own wife to death. The legal system, recognizing Brian's profound grief and the involuntary nature of the act, dropped all charges, acknowledging that he was a victim of his own subconscious medical condition.

Night and Day: The Mystery of the Solar Boys

The second story, "Night and Day," details the bizarre condition of two brothers, Shoaib Ahmed and Abdul Rashid, from Pakistan. Known by villagers as the "solar boys," they appeared perfectly healthy during daylight hours but would descend into a state of paralysis and muteness every night as the sun set. Despite initial skepticism from locals and failed attempts at exorcism, medical researchers eventually discovered that the boys suffered from a rare genetic mutation that suppressed dopamine production at night. By administering a daily dopamine supplement, doctors were able to effectively "turn their bodies back on," allowing the brothers to lead normal lives.

Leg Pain: A Fatal Transplant Mystery

The final story, "Leg Pain," is a harrowing medical mystery involving Robert Smith, a retired veteran who died following an undiagnosed illness after a kidney transplant. Initially misdiagnosed with sciatica, Robert’s condition rapidly deteriorated, characterized by fever, profuse sweating, drooling, and confusion. Despite extensive testing, doctors could not identify the cause until an autopsy revealed he had died from rabies.

Investigators from the CDC eventually traced the source back to the organ donor, William Edward Small, who had died months earlier. While it was initially believed William died from ciguatera poisoning, it was discovered he had been bitten by wild raccoons while training hunting dogs. The rabies virus had remained dormant in his kidneys and was transmitted to Robert during the transplant. The case highlights the terrifying reality of rare infections in transplant medicine, though the other recipients of William’s organs were saved through swift preventative vaccination.
