📋 Summary

The Last Tenant: A Fatal Protest

The story of David Feil, a 50-year-old man living in Bishopstoke, England, serves as a haunting example of how stubbornness can escalate into self-destruction. By 2008, the apartment complex where Feil had lived for eight years had fallen into severe disrepair, becoming an "abandoned" shell with "72 apartments" where he was the "last tenant." When the owners, Atlantic Housing, moved to demolish the site, Feil refused to leave, even after legal proceedings resulted in an "eviction notice."

Driven by a desperate need to protest what he perceived as an unjust ruling, Feil constructed an elaborate trap in his living room. When authorities eventually forced their way into the apartment, they were met with a gruesome scene: Feil had rigged a "power tool"—specifically a chainsaw—with an "electric timer." He had positioned himself so that the device would decapitate him upon activation, effectively turning his own death into a final, horrific statement against his eviction. The event made national headlines, though the complex was ultimately demolished regardless of his sacrifice.

The Good Reverend: A Descent into Paranoid Delusion

The second narrative follows Reverend John Carmichael, a man whose life was upended by a perceived supernatural threat. While traveling to a religious revival in 1909, Carmichael encountered Gideon Browning, a local known for erratic behavior. Carmichael, already feeling "paranoid and on edge" due to previous chance encounters with Browning, became convinced that the man possessed "magical powers" and was stalking him.

When Browning pulled out a coin and began flipping it, the rhythmic sound and motion triggered a deep-seated delusion in the Reverend. Carmichael became convinced that Browning was using the coin to "hypnotize" him, controlling his thoughts and actions. This led to a series of bizarre events, including Carmichael purchasing a hatchet for Browning and accompanying him to his church in Rattle Run.

However, the reality of the situation was far more tragic. According to the investigation, the "spell" was merely a product of the Reverend's deteriorating mental state. When the coin accidentally fell, Carmichael believed the "spell was now broken." In a violent act of perceived self-defense, he murdered Browning with the hatchet and burned the body in the church stove. In an attempt to cover his tracks, he shredded his own suit to stage his death, assumed Browning's identity, and fled 500 miles away.

Ultimately, the charade ended when Carmichael, living under the pseudonym "John Elder," died by suicide in a boarding house. Police discovered a confession letter in his pocket, revealing that the entire ordeal—from the hypnosis to the murder—was driven by his unchecked mental illness. The story serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences that can occur when mental health crises go unaddressed.
