📋 Summary

The Perfect Bait: A Macabre Discovery

The first narrative, "The Perfect Bait," chronicles a chilling incident occurring 56 miles off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Fisherman Sam Watts and his crewmate, Michael Edwards, were securing their vessel during a sudden, violent storm when a "huge rogue wave" struck the boat. The impact sent Edwards "careening off the side into the ocean." Despite an extensive search by the crew and police, Edwards vanished, and the search was eventually called off, with the crew concluding he had drowned.

Driven by the financial necessity of their profession, the crew opted to continue fishing rather than returning to port. Their labor proved highly lucrative, yielding large "flowery cods" weighing nearly 100 pounds. However, the true horror unfolded days later at a fish processing plant. A worker cutting open a 97-pound cod discovered the undigested head of Michael Edwards inside. It became clear that after hitting the water, Edwards had been attacked by sharks or crocodiles, and his remains were consumed by the giant cod, leaving his face "fixed in terror" as a silent witness to his gruesome end.

The Gray Blanket: The Tragedy of the Lucky Dragon No. 5

The second story, "The Gray Blanket," follows Oishi Matashishi and the crew of the Lucky Dragon No. 5. In March 1954, while anchored near the Marshall Islands, the crew witnessed a terrifying phenomenon: a "bright yellowy light" in the western sky, followed by a "deafening explosion." Although they feared a volcanic eruption or an atomic bomb, they were initially comforted by the distance from the blast.

Soon, however, they were overtaken by "weird gray clouds" that defied wind patterns. A strange, milky substance began to fall, turning into a snow-like material that refused to melt. The crew, unaware of the lethal nature of this "death ash," even collected samples to bring home.

As the ship returned to Japan, the crew began to suffer from severe radiation sickness. Oishi experienced "intense nausea," his skin began "disintegrating," and his hair fell out in "huge clumps." Upon returning to Yaezu, the crew attempted to keep the incident secret, but the physical reality of their condition—lesions, bleeding gums, and gray skin—made concealment impossible.

It was eventually revealed that the crew had been the first humans to experience "fallout" from a U.S. military hydrogen bomb test—a weapon "a thousand times more powerful than atomic bombs." The "snow" they encountered was actually pulverized coral reefs rendered radioactive by the blast. While only one crew member died initially, the survivors faced lifelong health struggles, including cancers and birth defects in their offspring. Oishi, who lived until 2021, spent his remaining years as an anti-bomb advocate, forever marked by the horrific "death ash" that descended upon them in the open sea.
