📋 Summary

Transforming Your Space: A Comprehensive Guide to Decluttering

In this session, Sadie takes us through her personal journey of decluttering and organizing her room. Following a move back from her university apartment, she found herself overwhelmed by the accumulation of "too much stuff" that no longer fit her current living space. This process serves as a practical blueprint for anyone looking to reset their environment and adopt a more minimalist lifestyle.

The Psychology of Over-Accumulation

Sadie highlights a common struggle: the difficulty of letting go. Whether it is "camera battery chargers" that no longer work or "camera tripod attachments" for gear she no longer owns, the emotional attachment to items "just in case" often leads to unnecessary clutter. Recognizing that she had "way too much stuff" was the first step in her transformation. She emphasizes the importance of being "really honest" with oneself during the sorting process to move past the fear of discarding unused items.

Strategic Decluttering: A Systematic Approach

To manage the overwhelming task, Sadie breaks her room down into specific zones, employing a two-pile method: "keep" and "throw away."

  • Tech and School Supplies: By auditing her camera equipment and school drawer, she identifies items she "literally never reach[es] for," effectively clearing out excess tech and stationery.
  • Makeup and Skincare: A major hurdle was the influx of PR packages. Sadie advocates for sticking to a consistent routine: "if it works, I'm just gonna stick with it." She reminds viewers to check the expiration dates on products, noting that you don't want to be "putting that on your face" if it has expired.
  • Personal Essentials: Even the most personal items, like the "underwear drawer," require maintenance. Sadie identifies "mismatched" socks and worn-out undergarments as prime candidates for removal, proving that no corner of the room is exempt from the decluttering process.

Achieving a Minimalist Aesthetic

Beyond just cleaning, the goal was to "minimalize" the room. By clearing off shelves and reorganizing bins, Sadie aims to create a space that doesn't trigger "brain clutter." She notes that when her surroundings are disorganized, she feels the mental weight of knowing "nothing's gonna be in the right place." By curating her decorations and ensuring that bins are used only for items she "reach[es] for often," she successfully creates a more serene living environment.

Lessons for Future Transitions

One of the most significant takeaways from Sadie’s experience is the preparation for future moves. Realizing that she moved five carloads of items from her university apartment but "barely used like 50% of the stuff," she sets a new goal: to "not overcrowd" her future university space.

Conclusion

Decluttering is not a one-time event but a practice that gets easier with repetition. As Sadie notes, "the more that you do declutter, the easier it gets." By conducting these sessions, she has transformed her room into a space that is functional, organized, and ready for her next life chapter. This process serves as a powerful reminder that simplifying our physical surroundings is a direct path to mental clarity and intentional living.

📖 Transcript

Hey guys, it's sadie.
I'm so excited for this video.
I am doing one of my favorite things to ever do on this planet and that is decluttering and organizing my room.
As you guys know, i used to live in my school apartment in waterloo and then i had to take everything back because i'm not going back that same apartment.
So i kind of just combined all of my stuff and now things don't fit in this room, have less storage and now all of my little containers that i have in my drawers.
I just don't really like how that's decorated.
