The Tragic Deception: A Tale of Obsession and Murder

The Illusion of a Soulmate

In January 2017, William Hargrove, a lonely mechanic living in Oregon with a deep obsession for "science fiction and fantasy," sought to change his life. Through an international dating website, he connected with Anna Repkina, a Russian woman who "fundamentally believed that there was a soulmate somewhere in the world for everyone." Their connection seemed fated, leading Will to propose with an emerald ring. However, this ring held a dark secret: it was not a new token of love, but a "promise ring" originally given to Will by Michelle Chavez, a married woman with whom Will had been having an "intense affair" since 2015.

The Triangle of Jealousy

When Anna arrived in Oregon to start a new life, the reality of Will’s deception began to surface. Michelle, who had previously demanded that Will choose between her and Anna, eventually "kicked him and Anna out of the house" once she discovered their engagement. Despite the separation, Michelle continued to be a "thorn in their side," sending threatening messages and incessantly calling Will. Will, unable to decide between the two women, resorted to manipulation. He fabricated a story about a wedding officiant canceling their ceremony on the beach, a "ruse" designed solely to "buy himself some time" as he struggled to navigate his conflicting loyalties.

The Fatal Choice

On April 16, 2017, Will finally made his choice. He lured Anna into the woods under the guise of an "important" conversation, only to tell her he wanted to "call off the engagement." After Anna walked away in heartbreak, Will retrieved a shotgun from his car, tracked her down in a clearing, and executed her by placing the barrel "against the back of Anna's skull" and pulling the trigger. To conceal his crime, he scattered Anna’s belongings and trash around her body.

A Delusional Quest for Redemption

Following the murder, Will displayed a chilling psychological dissociation. He initially sent desperate text messages to Anna to "cover his tracks," but soon fell into a state of intense regret. In a bizarre attempt to rectify his actions, Will channeled his obsession with fantasy movies, believing he could "use time travel to go back in time and get Anna back." He spent 72 hours "scouring the internet" for blueprints for a time machine and later searching for "the right magical spell." He even offered to "sell his soul" to strangers online for such a spell.

Justice Served

His delusional quest was cut short on April 19th when police arrived at his door. The investigation had been cracked by a simple piece of evidence: a receipt from a "Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant" found in the trash near Anna’s body. This evidence placed Will at the scene, leading to his eventual arrest. In January 2020, William Hargrove was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Anna Repkina, while Michelle Chavez, despite her role in the toxic dynamic, was never charged with a crime.
