According to Eric Christensen of the Catalina Sky Survey, an impact of that magnitude would cause "global problems," potentially triggering a "nuclear winter" by filling the atmosphere with dust and water, which would block sunlight and devastate the global food supply.

Historical precedents emphasize this danger. The "Tunguska event" of 1908, where an asteroid roughly 65 metres across exploded over Russia, flattened 2,000 square kilometres of forest with the force of a massive nuclear bomb. Eyewitness reports from the time, such as those from members of the Shanyagir tribe, described the event as having "a second sun" and noted the earth "moving and shaking," illustrating the sheer destructive power of even relatively small space rocks.

Global Cooperation and Future Security

As Ed Lu, director of the Asteroid Institute, noted, the DART project is essential because "someday we are going to find an asteroid which has a high chance of hitting the Earth." Having the experience and technology to deflect such a threat is a proactive measure for survival.

Crucially, the DART project was not the effort of a single nation. While led by NASA, it was a collaborative achievement involving the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency and the Italian Space Agency, with further study planned by the European Space Agency. NASA administrator Bill Nelson emphasized that the project "represents a great success for planetary defence" and stands as a testament to humanity "coming together" to protect our home planet. By successfully executing this test, the global scientific community has effectively turned "made-up science fiction stories into science facts," ensuring that we are better prepared for the uncertainties of the future.
