Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.

Come on! Let's master English!
Hello everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
Today's podcast is brought to you by MyClasses.
Let me tell you about them at the end of the podcast. Today's expression is out in the sticks.
Out in, what? The sticks?
the sticks is an expression it just means the country the deep country why does the sticks mean the country what sticks STI Cks that means you know pieces of wood so in this case sticks actually means trees so the sticks lots and lots of trees.
The forest, in the sticks, in the forest, in the country.
Yeah, that's the idea.
In the sticks, the opposite of the city.
So, if we think about this city, we might think about the opposite of a city being a farm, right?
You know, you got corn and cows and whatever.
But it could also be the desert where you got nothing, just sand.
It might be the mountains, lots of mountains or it could be the woods or the forests.
And in this case in the sticks means the woods, the forest. It also has the nuance of not Not too much technology.
Quiet. Dark. Sometimes not too smart.
People who live in the sticks, most of them probably didn't go to the university.
Some of them did but not most of them.
So the idea in the sticks means in the woods, especially in the deep dark woods.
It might be dangerous for some people.
You gotta be tough, you gotta be a man.
So in the sticks, in the woods, out in the sticks, why do you say out in the sticks?
It means away, far away in the woods.
Out in the sticks. Have you ever been out in the sticks?
Oh, I love being out in the sticks.
It's been a while since I have been out in the sticks.
Where I live, there's a desert.
So, every day, I go walking and I'm out in the desert.
And when I'm out in the desert, when I'm in the desert, there's nobody around.
Just some lizards, coyotes, what else.
A sheep, those bighorn sheep.
And me, that's it. Some birds, some bugs, that's it.
No people, no electricity.
No telephone service.
I'm out in the desert.
Where is Shane? Oh, he's out in the desert.
But I would prefer to be out in the sticks.
Oh, I wish I could be out in the sticks right now in the middle of the forest That would be great.
Let's check out the dialogue.
I Heard Shane moved.
Yeah, he's out in the sticks now.
How far out Far he lives on a mountain with no neighbors.
Oh Out in the sticks.
I lived on a mountain away from everybody.
No people around, just trees.
It was fantastic. But there were lots of mosquitoes, too.
Yeah, now I'm out in the desert.
There are no people around.
Very few people. There's lots of dangerous animals.
Argh! Argh! Hungry, dangerous animals.
Out in the sticks out in the desert out in the fields in the prairies out in the savannah out in the city yeah it makes sense the city can be a jungle so I want to know the last time you were out in the sticks or perhaps out in the Do you like being out in the sticks?
Or do you prefer being in the city?
Most of you probably live in the city.
But do you live out in the sticks?
Well, I'm jealous. I'm serious.
If I can, if I'm lucky, maybe in five years, I'll be back out in the sticks.
I hope so. Check out the dialogue two more times, And then let me tell you about my classes real quick.
I heard Shane moved.
