Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me everyday.
Come on. Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily easy English expression.
It's December 6, 2014.
Are you getting ready for Christmas?
I hope so. Actually, I have finally the chance to spend Christmas with my mother and father.
It has been oh my goodness so long about 20 years over 20 years Since I've been able to spend Christmas with them.
So I have prepared a couple of presents and They're very large presents.
So when I walk into their house as Santa Claus I will say Give me a wide berth.
Give me a wide berth Give me a wide berth That is today's expression and that is what I will be saying when I bring presents to my mother, father and sister on Christmas.
I'm so excited. What does it mean to give me a wide berth?
Okay give G -I -V -E give me a wide W -I -D -E wide?
What's the opposite of wide?
Narrow very good narrow and a RRO w birth B ERth give a wide birth that means give a lot of space Give a lot of space so birth has this nuance of a large amount of distance and it comes from shipping so one ship to the shore so a ship when it's coming into port or when it's coming near the shore it must maintain a safe distance otherwise of course it could have a great problem so it needs to maintain a distance and that distance is called a birth so it's a space it's a large distance it's a safe amount of distance, of separation from the ship to the land.
And the same with me, if I'm carrying all of these boxes, these presents, and if you touch me, I might drop the presents.
So you have to give me a wide berth.
Give me a lot of space so I can walk through.
Do you understand? Can you imagine a large truck?
Let's say a large truck wants to turn right or even turn left. Can a large truck turn quickly like a small car?
No, it can't. A large truck or a large bus must have a very wide turn.
And so if you see a large bus or a large truck that wants to turn right or turn left, don't get close to the truck.
Give it a wide berth.
Give it a lot of space so that it can make its turn.
Do you understand? All right, here's another great example on when you can use this expression.
Why are you stopping?
An ambulance is coming.
So? You should always give emergency vehicles a wide berth.
Exactly. Yeah, especially in America, if you see an ambulance, a fire truck, a police car coming, you better pull over to the side of the road and if it's safe, you can even stop.
Yeah, it's very important.
Sometimes they'll even give you a ticket if you do not give an emergency vehicle a wide berth.
So it's serious stuff.
So December 24th, if you have been a good person Santa Claus might visit you and if Santa visits you hopefully he'll be bringing lots of presents, so make sure you give Santa a wide birth so that he can walk into your house and deliver tons and tons of Christmas presents to you and your family.
Of course, I know that not all families believe in Santa Claus, but I do.
Please Santa, please come to my house, I'll give you a wide birth check out the dialogue two more times where are you stopping an ambulance is coming so you should always give emergency vehicles a wide berth where are you stopping an ambulance is coming so you should always give emergency vehicles a wide berth.

What is the difference?
Well, Alex, I'm sorry, Alex, but can you please give me a sentence?
When are you confused?
This and that, those can be confusing, but is, is a be verb.
I hope that we can eliminate is from your confusion, This and that those can be confusing this is the thing That is right in front of you that is the thing that is far away but if that doesn't answer your question Give me some example sentences on when you are confused and I'll do my best to answer Thanks so much to all my patrons Once again to Han and to Alex.
