Complacency proved fatal. By the 1980s, the bacteria became "resistant to many drugs." Because wealthier nations viewed the disease as a problem of the past, funding for new research dried up. Tuberculosis surged in poorer, densely populated regions of Africa and Asia. The crisis was further exacerbated by the rise of HIV. Because HIV "attacks the body's defensive cells," it creates a vulnerability that tuberculosis exploits; today, TB accounts for 40% of all HIV-related deaths.

A Call for Renewed Global Commitment

Despite these challenges, there is room for optimism. Research into new medications is "ongoing," and increased testing in high-risk regions is proving effective in curbing the spread. Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, director of the World Health Organization, emphasizes that the world now possesses the "knowledge and tools" and the "political will" to eradicate this ancient threat.
