📋 Summary

The Legend of Crocus Pocus: A Lesson in Generosity

The Burden of Responsibility

The story follows a young man named Nicola, who inherits a family vineyard on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. Determined to honor his parents' legacy, Nicola works tirelessly, waking up early and going to bed late. However, he soon faces a series of misfortunes: heavy clouds bring a "nonstop torrent of rain" that ruins the grapes, followed by an infestation of "pesky parasites"—caterpillars. By harvest time, Nicola is left with only a single, meager basket of fruit, leaving him fearful of a "long hungry winter."

A Test of Character at the Marketplace

Nicola attempts to sell his small harvest at the marketplace, but he is ignored by shoppers who favor the "bountiful harvest" of other vendors. Feeling like a failure, he prepares to quit. His path is crossed by an elderly woman, described as having hair "white as sugar" and a back "curved like a question mark." Despite his own desperate financial state, when the woman asks for help, Nicola’s heart softens. He chooses to share his last remaining grapes with her, stating, "I'd rather make someone else's day, by helping them in their time of need."

The Miraculous Transformation

As the woman consumes the grapes, a "surprising" and "utterly impossible" transformation occurs. The old woman sheds her ragged appearance, revealing herself as a radiant young woman. She rewards Nicola’s "compassionate and generous" nature by magically restoring his basket of grapes. She instructs him to plant the grapes in his vineyard, promising him a reward for his kindness.

The Birth of the Crocus and Saffron Wealth

Though Nicola is skeptical—knowing that "planting a grape and expecting results is preposterous"—he follows her instructions. The next morning, he discovers that where he planted the grapes, "little cup-shaped" flowers known as crocuses have sprouted. He discovers that the stigmas of these flowers are highly aromatic and flavorful. By drying these stigmas, he creates a "brand-new spice" that captivates the marketplace.

It is revealed that these are the flowers that produce saffron, "the most expensive spice in the world." Nicola’s act of selflessness leads to lifelong prosperity, proving that "amazing things can happen when you let compassion, kindness and generosity take root inside your heart and bloom."

Conclusion

The tale of Crocus Pocus serves as a timeless reminder that true wealth is not merely measured in harvests or coins, but in the character one displays toward others during times of hardship. By choosing to help a stranger, Nicola transformed his "brutal" summer into a legacy of abundance, illustrating the moral that kindness is a seed that, when planted, yields the most valuable rewards.
