Hi, welcome to Wednesday and to Radio Headspace.
I'm Dora, if you're new.
When I first started meditating, I was convinced I needed the perfect setup.
I bought a fancy cushion, a meditation bell, and even a blanket with tassels that I thought would make me feel like a Zen master.
But as the usual sirens outside began their symphony and my neighbor practiced her DJ skills, I realized the truth.
None of those things mattered.
Meditation isn't just about the props, it's about our ability to show up despite our surroundings.
So for today, as we continue building our meditation practice, we're diving into the topic of creating physical space for your practice.
And this is something my students often ask about, especially if they're living with others or don't have much room to spare.
And while there's a whole market of meditation tools like cushions, bells, tools, blankets, you'll be relieved to hear this, all you really need is you.
Creating a dedicated space for meditation helps signal your mind and body that it's time to slow down.
And while props and decorations can inspire your practice, they're not really necessary, so don't let them become a barrier.
After all, the aim is to be present in our lives without distraction.
And, sometimes, props or tools can be a distraction.
For centuries, traditions like Feng Shui in China, and Vastu Shastra in India, have shown how intentional spaces can create more harmony and balance in our lives.
And even simple changes like rearranging furniture, opening the curtains, or lighting a favorite candle can enhance your practice and make the space feel more inviting.
When I was in elementary school, my mom would always say, the state of your room is a reflection of the state of your mind.
At the time I didn't really get it.
I mean how could a messy bedroom possibly be connected to how I was feeling inside?
But I soon started to notice the pattern.
Whenever my room looked like a tornado had swept through it, my thoughts felt just as scattered.
It was like my brain was trying to process everything at once.
Homework, chores, social stuff.
Just like the pile of clothes, papers, and toys on the floor.
Then there were the days when I took the time to clean up.
I'd put away my books, fold my clothes, and even make my bed.
And after that, something would shift.
My mind would feel spacious.
I'd feel calmer and clearer, like I could actually think without all the clutter weighing me down.
It was like a little life hack I stumbled upon.
Clear room. Clear mind.
And who knew that a little dusting and organizing could make such a difference?
And it's a practice I still continue to use today whenever life feels overwhelming.
I tidy up, and suddenly, everything feels a bit more manageable.
And I'm not saying that you need to go on a full -on cleaning spree, but hear me out, it's all about working with what you've got.
Whether you have an entire room dedicated to Zen or a little corner of your bed, creating a space with a few meaningful items or soothing colors can really elevate your practice.
So here are some fun, no cost ideas to get you started.
One, try rearranging your room for more sunlight.
Or dive into a beginner's feng shui book to bring a little balance to your space.
If you're tight on room, why not bring in a touch of nature.
A plant, a flower, or even the scent of an incense can work wonders.
And hey, if you're living with others, the bathroom might be your secret meditation hideaway.
Just think, some quiet time before even during your shower.
Bonus points if you add a bit of lavender essential oil.
Now, if you really want to treat yourself to some meditation goodies, a cushion, bench, or stool can help you get comfy for longer sits.
A tingsha bell is a beautiful way to start and end your practice, and a calming candle adds that perfect finishing touch.
The key thing to remember is that your space isn't about shouting the word world out.
It's about connecting more deeply to yourself and ultimately others.
The sound of the street or background noise of your roommates can actually help to increase your ability to pay attention.
So whether you're surrounded by noise or peace, the present moment is always there for you to tap into and 100 % free.
