While the environmental impact of plastic is devastating, scientific research offers a glimmer of hope. Scientists are investigating specific microbes, such as Rhodococcus ruba, which show potential in breaking down plastic into its basic components. However, experts argue that relying solely on recycling is insufficient. A systemic shift is required to emphasize the reduction of plastic production, particularly regarding packaging and single-use items.

Plastic was originally invented to replace scarce natural resources like wood, metal, and glass.
