Climate and the Black Death: A Volcanic Connection

History and science converge in an investigation into the 1347 outbreak of the Black Death. While commonly attributed to bacteria spread by fleas on rodents, historians like Hannah Barker and Martin Bauch propose a climate-driven origin. The hypothesis suggests that massive volcanic eruptions in 1345 injected sulfate aerosols into the stratosphere, causing global cooling, extreme rainfall, and widespread crop failure.

To survive, European populations increased grain imports from the Mongol Empire, unwittingly importing the plague-carrying rodents. Evidence from "ancient tree ring samples" and "ice cores containing unusually high deposits of sulfate aerosols" published in Communications Earth and Environment provides a compelling link between volcanic-induced climate downturns and one of history’s deadliest pandemics.

The Dark Altruism of Infected Ants

A study published in Nature Communications reveals a chilling survival mechanism within ant colonies. When pupae are infected with a fungus, they release chemical signals that alert worker ants to their condition. In a process described by researcher Erica Dawson, worker ants peel the cocoons and spray the infected pupae with "formic acid," effectively disinfecting the colony at the cost of the individual’s life.

This "self-sacrificing" behavior, however, has a notable exception: future queens. These individuals do not signal when infected and appear capable of fighting off fungal infections on their own, ensuring the survival of the next generation of colony leaders. This discovery underscores the brutal efficiency of evolutionary biology in maintaining the health of the collective.
