Postdoc Leo Uesaka, who originally intended to study the birds' takeoff mechanics by attaching cameras to their bellies, discovered that these birds defecate with startling frequency while at sea. After reviewing over 30 hours of footage, Uesaka found that the birds defecate on average every four to ten minutes, losing approximately 5% of their body mass every hour. This finding is scientifically significant because traditional estimates of seabird excretion were based solely on land-based observations. Independent biologist Daniel Plaza notes that this data is crucial for ecosystem management; if seabirds are metabolically processing food at this rate, current fishing regulations and catch limits may be underestimating the amount of fish these birds need to consume for survival.

Linking Metabolites to Daytime Sleepiness

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS), a condition affecting up to one in three people in the U.S., is the focus of a new study published in eBiomedicine. Researchers utilized the Epworth Sleepiness Scale—a survey measuring the likelihood of dozing off during various daily activities—to evaluate 6,000 volunteers. By analyzing 877 different metabolites in the participants' blood, the team identified ten molecules linked to self-reported sleepiness. Notably, a metabolite of tyramine, commonly found in fermented foods, aged cheese, and alcohol, was associated with higher rates of sleepiness, particularly in men. Conversely, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in fish, nuts, and seeds, were linked to lower rates of sleepiness. Lead author Tarek Fakih suggests that while these findings are promising, further clinical trials are necessary to confirm how specific dietary changes can directly influence wakefulness.
