📋 Summary

Navigating Global Trade and Geopolitical Tensions

The global economic landscape remains volatile as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to utilize tariffs as a primary diplomatic tool. Recently, a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada was paused following agreements with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Claudia Sheinbaum. As part of this deal, both nations committed to deploying 10,000 military personnel to their borders to address the flow of fentanyl. This strategic pause highlights the high-stakes negotiations characterizing the current administration's approach to trade and security, with President Xi Jinping of China also slated for upcoming high-level discussions.

Commercial Real Estate: A Long Road to Recovery

After experiencing a "complete tailspin" following the 2021 peak, the commercial real estate sector is showing tentative signs of life. According to FT’s Joshua Oliver, the industry suffered due to a shift in the interest rate environment, where rising debt costs and geopolitical shocks severely impacted asset confidence. During this downturn, European asset values declined by nearly a quarter, and transaction volumes plummeted by half, marking one of the worst periods since the global financial crisis.

While investment volumes in 2024 have increased by roughly 4%, the sector remains at half the peak levels seen in 2021. The recovery is primarily driven by central banks cutting interest rates, which acts as the "starting gun" for a debt-driven industry. Furthermore, the market is beginning to stabilize as sellers finally "accept the new reality" of lower valuations. A significant shift is occurring in portfolio strategies; while traditional office and retail sectors remain "very challenged," there is a growing pivot toward residential sectors to address housing shortages. Despite this, experts warn that potential distress is still "lurking out there," as the full impact of the downturn may only surface fully once the music finally stops.

Inflation and the European Central Bank

Inflationary pressures persist within the eurozone, with price increases unexpectedly ticking up to 2.5% last month. Although the European Central Bank (ECB) aims for a 2% target, it remains largely unfazed by this uptick. Because the current figures are still performing better than the bank's internal forecasts, the ECB is not expected to alter its interest rate trajectory in the near term, even as concerns grow regarding the inflationary impact of potential future U.S. tariffs.

The European AI Ambition: Is Mistral Losing Its Way?

Europe’s flagship AI company, Mistral, once hailed as the continent's answer to U.S. tech giants, is facing an identity crisis. Founded by esteemed researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral initially captured the market's imagination, raising $100 million within four weeks. However, the company is struggling to keep pace with better-funded American rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, which have raised significantly more capital to invest in the "enormous investment in computing power" required to lead in the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

The recent disruption caused by the Chinese firm DeepSeek, which achieved breakthroughs using far fewer chips, has further complicated Mistral’s position. While DeepSeek’s success validates Mistral’s original thesis—that one does not need "Silicon Valley style capital" to make progress—it raises uncomfortable questions about why a European company has not yet achieved such a breakthrough. As FT’s Tim Bradshaw notes, the onus is now on Mistral to prove it can replicate such efficiency while catering to "sovereign European customers and governments," or risk missing its moment entirely in the global AI race.
