Welcome to the A to Z English Podcast.
My name is Jack, and I'm here with my co -host, Sochal.
And today we're going to do a collocation exercise.
And Sochal, I'm going to define collocation here quickly for our students.
A collocation is a combination of words.
that are commonly used together in a natural way by native speakers.
And these word pairings just sound right to us because we have a native intuition.
So let's kind of quiz you quickly, social.
I'm going to give you three verbs.
The first one is pay.
The second one is bear.
And the third one is run.
And I'm going to give you three words or phrases, and I want you to see if you can match them together.
So the first one is pay.
And so here's the three choices.
Responsibility, a risk.
What I'd like to do is kind of quiz you quickly.
I'm going to give you three verbs.
The first one is pay.
uh the second one is bear and the third one is run and i'm gonna and i'm gonna give you three uh words or or phrases and i want you to see if you can match them together so the first one is pay and so here's the here's the three choices uh responsibility a risk or tribute paid tribute ah very good paid
tribute is the collocation paying tribute to the original artist oh yeah that happens all the time with like the beatles or something there'll be like a beatles tribute album and it's like the people re -recording for someone who does like a remix or a remake or someone who in art might do like a it's
it's a bit hard to explain but someone in art who might replicate an iconic photo or an iconic song or an iconic something it usually is paying tribute to the original artist oh yeah that happens all the time with like the beatles or something there'll be like a beatles tribute album and it's like the people
re -recording songs from their their albums and in honor of them it's it's it's to show honor or respect to somebody is to pay tribute yeah okay excellent um yeah i like your example because uh tribute albums are or tribute songs are really common so um number two okay uh is bear that's the verb bear
tribute bear a risk or bear responsibility or at raley's in knob hill this week clip your digital member deal before checkout to get large packs of raley's fresh boneless skinless chicken breast raised with no antibiotics ever for only 247 a pound limit two packs and clip your digital member deal to

This app is like having a personal trainer.
Yeah, but those apps collect a lot of your personal data.
Aren't you worried?
Really? That's creepy.
How do I stop that?
You should go to private.
I definitely bear responsibility for his well -being and for his behavior and everything.
Right, right. Yeah.
And, yeah, so I think this is a pretty, like, as the students listen to us here talk about these collocations, you can see how quickly social is able to answer it.
just based on like got him um would you say you you now you bear responsibility for his well -being yes i definitely bear responsibility for his well -being and for his behavior and everything right right yeah and uh yeah so i think this is a pretty like as the students listen to us here talk about these
these collocations you can see how quickly Social is able to answer it just based on like there's you never learned this in school or anything right this is just a something that comes naturally when you know the language really well so yeah I would say that's true I know you never learn about this in school
in fact when Jack to be completely honest when Jack talked to me about collocations I went in blind so I didn't really know what this episode was going to be about I didn't know anything about like what he was going to say ahead of time run responsibility we knew what it would run tribute think yeah
it just feels natural and when you're very to risk let's say you start a business you always run a risk that your business will fail there you go um i'll just read the dictionary definition here to expose oneself to the possibility of danger or loss which is exactly what you said you start a business
you could lose all your money it's possible you run a risk of it right okay uh you can take us out social i think that's that's uh that's it for today all right students well um ask us more about this if you'd like to know more about this we're definitely happy to do more episodes on it go more into
depth about it make sure to send us any email questions that you have we absolutely love bringing your emails.
Danger or loss, which is exactly what you said.
You start a business.
You could lose all your money.
It's possible. You run a risk of it.
Right. Okay. You can take us out socially.
I think that's it for today.
All right, students.
