📋 Summary

The Life and Crusade of Dr. Eugene Mallove

Dr. Eugene Mallove was a distinguished scientist, holding degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from MIT and a doctorate in environmental health sciences from Harvard. Beyond his academic pedigree, Mallove was a passionate advocate for "cold fusion," or "low-level nuclear reaction." He viewed this technology as a revolutionary solution to the world's energy crisis, capable of providing unlimited, clean energy. After a high-profile resignation from MIT in 1991—where he accused the institution of suppressing cold fusion data to protect conventional funding—Mallove became a vocal outsider. He founded the magazine Infinite Energy and the New Energy Foundation, dedicating his life to legitimizing cold fusion research against mainstream skepticism.

The Rental Property Dispute

In 2003, seeking extra income to support his foundation, Mallove began managing his parents' vacant home in Norwich, Connecticut. He rented the property to Patricia and Roy Anderson. However, by early 2004, the Andersons stopped paying rent. Following a stressful mediation process, the couple agreed to vacate the premises by mid-April. In May 2004, Mallove traveled from his home in New Hampshire to Norwich to clean out the property, which had been left in a state of disrepair, littered with debris and car parts, and reportedly used by the Andersons' son, Chad Schaefer, and his associates for illicit activities, including selling "crack cocaine."

The Brutal Homicide

On May 14, 2004, while Mallove was clearing the property, he was confronted by Chad Schaefer and his cousin, Mizell Brown. Motivated by anger over the eviction and fear that Mallove might discover evidence of their drug-dealing activities in the garage, the two men launched a violent attack. They beat Mallove with a metal pipe and, after briefly leaving the scene, returned with Chad’s girlfriend, Candace Foster. They forced Foster to participate in the assault before Mizell Brown ultimately killed Mallove by standing on his throat. The trio attempted to stage the scene as a robbery, stealing Mallove's belongings and abandoning his van at a nearby casino.

The Investigation and Resolution

Initial investigations were plagued by missteps. Police wrongly arrested two burglars based on flawed forensic evidence, leaving the murder as a cold case for years. The breakthrough finally arrived in 2009, triggered by a $50,000 reward and a tip from a woman named Jill Sebastian, who had seen bloody clothing at Candace Foster’s apartment.

Crucial physical evidence—a set of keys found near the body with a tag reading "Brittany" (the name of Chad Schaefer’s daughter)—had been overlooked because they lacked the grass clippings present on the rest of the scene, indicating they were dropped after Mallove had finished mowing the lawn. With Foster’s cooperation and testimony, the truth was revealed. In 2012 and 2014, Chad Schaefer and Mizell Brown were sentenced to 16 and 58 years in prison, respectively. Candace Foster received five years probation. While Mallove’s death was a devastating loss to the scientific community, his advocacy for cold fusion left a lasting legacy, as the US Department of Energy eventually moved toward a more open review of the very technology he had championed until his final days.

📖 Transcript

Very late one night in 2004, a woman in Connecticut pulled into the driveway of a house that had just been put on the market for rent.
She didn't know if the owner was home or not, but she figured even if they were, they probably wouldn't care if she just quickly walked around the outside of their property and then left.
So, after turning her car off, she hopped out of the vehicle and began walking down the driveway toward the dark backyard.
But before getting there, she stopped because something on the ground was staring up at her.
But before we get into today's story, if you're a fan of the Strange, Dark and Mysterious Deliberate in Story format, then you've come to the right podcast, because that's all we do and we upload twice a week once on Monday and once on Thursday.
So if that's of interest to you, please offer to be the five-star review button's assistant as they fix their car troubles, but do not hold the flashlight steady.
