📋 Summary

The Mayor's Quest for the 'Cleverest' Deputy

In this episode of Circle Around, titled "The Cleverest Person in the Room," we meet a mayor who prides himself on being the "brightest baby in the nursery, the sharpest student in school, the sabbiest citizen in town." Overwhelmed by his duties, he seeks a deputy to assist him, but insists that this person must be as clever as himself—someone capable of answering any question, "no matter how impossible it may seem."

The Encounter with Nina

During his search, the mayor encounters a woman named Nina tending to her basil plants. He attempts to test her wit with an impossible question: "how many leaves they'll have once they've grown full size?" Nina, demonstrating her superior intellect, immediately counters with impossible questions of her own, asking the mayor to calculate "how many fish swim in the sea," "how many stars shine in the sky," and "how many grains of sand lie on the beach." Recognizing her brilliance, the mayor hires Nina as his deputy, and they eventually marry. As a condition of her employment, Nina secures a promise from the mayor: if she is ever forced to step down, he must grant her one last request, which she seals in an envelope.

The Cat Case and the Fall of Pride

Nina proves to be an indispensable deputy, yet the mayor's ego remains fragile. The tension peaks during a legal dispute involving a kitten. The mayor attempts to solve the case by placing the kitten between two cats, assuming it would naturally choose its mother. When the kitten gravitates toward a male cat, the mayor declares the case closed. However, Nina intervenes, pointing out that the cat is a "tom" (a male) and that the man had covered its fur in catnip, which explains the kitten’s behavior.

Humiliated by being corrected in front of his constituents, the mayor accuses Nina of having "overstepped" her position and demands she resign. Nina complies, but invokes the promise made before their wedding. She presents the sealed envelope containing her final request: if she must leave her position as deputy, the mayor must also give up his position.

Wisdom and Growth

Upon reading the note, the mayor realizes the depth of his foolishness and accepts his fate. Nina transitions into the role of judge, becoming known as the "wisest, fairest, and cleverest judge in all the land." The story concludes by highlighting that the true "cleverest person in the room" is one who recognizes their own limitations. The episode encourages listeners to embrace the "power of yet"—adopting a growth mindset to solve problems through persistence rather than pride, echoing Thomas Edison’s philosophy: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
