📋 Summary

The Wisdom of Manka: A Folktale Analysis

In the latest episode of Circle Round, listeners are treated to a classic European folktale titled "Clever Manka." Originating from the region once known as Czechoslovakia, this story centers on the protagonist, Manka, whose quick wit and intellectual prowess prove that true intelligence is the most valuable asset one can possess.

The Initial Encounter: Riddles and Righteousness

The narrative begins with a dispute between a greedy innkeeper and a humble tailor over a promised "lovely brown cow." When the case is brought before a fair, young judge, he decides to resolve the conflict using a series of riddles. The innkeeper, motivated by his "wealthy, proud and greedy" nature, relies on material possessions for his answers, citing his "strong black horse," "honey," and "chest of gold coins."

In contrast, Manka’s answers—provided through her father—demonstrate profound philosophical insight. She identifies the "fastest thing" as thoughts, the "sweetest" as sleep, and the "richest" as the Earth. Impressed by the tailor’s answers, the judge grants him the cow but becomes deeply intrigued by the source of the wisdom, leading him to challenge Manka to visit him under impossible conditions: "not by day or by night," "not riding or walking," and "not dressed or undressed."

The Mastery of Paradox

Manka’s solution to the judge's riddle serves as the climax of her intellectual debut. By arriving at dawn draped in a "fishnet," with one foot on the ground and the other over a "goat's back," she perfectly satisfies the paradoxical constraints. Her ability to navigate these logic puzzles leads to a mutual respect and eventual marriage with the judge. However, the judge imposes a strict condition: Manka must never "use your cleverness in any of the cases I am judging."

The Conflict of Justice and Cleverness

The tension arises when Manka encounters a farmer who was treated unfairly by her husband regarding a dispute over a colt. Despite her promise to stay out of the judge's affairs, Manka’s "kind heart" compels her to intervene. She devises a brilliant, albeit unconventional, plan: she instructs the farmer to cast a fishing line onto the "hard pavement" of the town square.

When the judge witnesses this absurdity, he is initially baffled. The farmer delivers Manka’s punchline: "It’s just as easy for me to catch a fish on the hard pavement as it is for a wagon to give birth to a colt." The judge realizes the error of his previous ruling, but upon discovering Manka’s involvement, he attempts to banish her, allowing her to take only the "one thing that you like best" from their home.

The Ultimate Lesson

In a final display of wit, Manka serves the judge a hearty meal that leaves him "drowsy," and subsequently transports him in a "wheelbarrow" back to her father’s cottage. Upon waking, the judge realizes that Manka’s choice of the "one thing she liked best" was him. This realization humbles the judge, who acknowledges that she is "far more clever" than he ever imagined. The story concludes with a heartwarming resolution: the judge invites Manka to consult on his most challenging cases, proving that collaboration and intellectual humility are the cornerstones of true justice.
