Chinese scientists have reached a monumental milestone in quantum information technology with the development of the Jiuzhang 40 programmable quantum computing prototype. Published in the journal Nature and led by the University of Science and Technology of China, this achievement marks a significant evolution in the field. The research team successfully utilized the prototype to solve the Gaussian boson sampling problem at a speed exceeding that of the world's most powerful supercomputer by a factor of more than 10 to the 54th power.
The core of this breakthrough lies in the ability of researchers to manipulate and detect quantum states of up to 3050 photons. This represents a massive leap from the 255 photons achieved in the previous Jiuzhang iterations. Professor Lu Chaoyang explained that the team developed a high-efficiency optical parametric oscillator light source and a spatio-temporally hybrid coded interferometer to achieve this. By integrating 1024 high-efficiency squeezed-state optical fields into an 8176-mode circuit, the system can generate complex data samples in a mere 25 microseconds—a duration significantly shorter than the blink of an eye. In stark contrast, a traditional supercomputer would require over 10 to the 42nd years to compute the same result. This advancement paves the way for future fault-tolerant optical quantum computing hardware and the construction of trillion-qubit-mode three-dimensional cluster states.
