Chicken Pickens: A Lesson in Honesty

The Quest for the Golden Kernel

The story follows Vicky, a "teeny tiny little itty bitty baby chick" with a singular, overriding passion: corn. While her siblings were content with cracked pieces, Vicky dreamt of consuming a "giant, whole golden kernel" all to herself. Her ambition was met with skepticism by her mother, who insisted a kernel was "the size of your head" and impossible for a chick to eat. Despite these limitations, Vicky remained determined to satisfy her cravings.

The Discovery of the Precious Ring

One autumn morning, while pecking at the farmyard dirt, Vicky discovered a "glowing golden" object embedded in the earth. It was a diamond ring, an item she recognized from a nursery rhyme her mother had sung. Understanding that humans considered such objects "valuable," Vicky realized she possessed a powerful bargaining tool. She reasoned that she could "trade the ring for corn," hoping to acquire her dream meal by navigating the complexities of the human marketplace.

The Challenges of the Marketplace

Vicky’s journey through the local farmer’s market proved to be a lesson in the disconnect between worldly value and personal desire. She encountered three distinct scenarios:

  1. The Dishonest Merchant: When Vicky approached a woman selling corn, the merchant attempted to seize the ring without compensation, calling Vicky a "thief." Vicky’s quick thinking and ability to "glide" allowed her to escape with her treasure intact.
  2. The Currency Confusion: A trader offered her "a thousand dollars" for the ring. However, to a chick with a "teeny tiny little itty bitty brain," money was merely "funky" paper that tasted "terrible." Because she couldn't eat the money, she rejected the offer, failing to grasp the abstract utility of currency.
  3. The Overwhelming Offer: Another vendor offered her "three bushels" of corn in exchange for the ring. Unfamiliar with the term "bushel" and fearing she was being swindled, Vicky grew frustrated and left, still clinging to her ring and her unfulfilled hunger.

Integrity Rewarded

Defeated, Vicky returned to the farm, where she encountered the farmer's wife searching desperately for her lost wedding ring. Recognizing the item as the one she had carried, Vicky immediately offered it to the woman. This act of honesty was met with gratitude and affection. The farmer's wife, calling Vicky the "best little chicken ever," pledged a reward. Consequently, Vicky’s integrity secured her a daily supply of corn kernels. She eventually ate until she was "stuffed round as a fuzzy yellow tennis ball," proving that her patience and moral choice were far more rewarding than her initial attempts to force a transaction.
