📋 Summary

The Charming Flute: A Tale of Music, Greed, and Redemption

The Power of a Simple Melody

In the latest episode of Circle Round, we are introduced to Anastasia, a humble shepherdess whose life is defined by her music. Anastasia possesses a simple reed flute, an instrument that brings her "endless joy." Her music is not merely pleasant; it holds "enchanting powers," compelling everyone within earshot to drop their tasks and sway to the rhythm. However, this joy is short-lived when her employer, a wealthy but "poor in kindness" landowner, discovers that his workers are becoming "bewitched by that troublesome thing." Viewing her music as a hindrance to productivity, the landowner cruelly snaps her flute in two and fires her.

The Mysterious Gift

Left without a job or her beloved instrument, Anastasia encounters a mysterious old man with a "long, flowing beard." Recognizing her distress, the man crafts a new flute from a tree branch. Upon playing this new instrument, Anastasia discovers it has an even more profound effect: it does not just enchant people, but calls the animals of the forest—tigers, bears, foxes, and birds—to gather around her, "transfixed, as the music washed over them." This magical flute allows Anastasia to build a new life, earning her bread in the town square and finding contentment among the creatures of the woods.

The Landowner’s Greed and the Shepherdess’s Plan

Driven by a vivid, selfish dream, the landowner becomes obsessed with capturing a specific, rare "white rabbit with a perfect circle of black fur." He promises his son half his wealth if he can obtain it. When the son encounters the same old man from the forest, he is directed to Anastasia. Recognizing the man as the son of her former boss, Anastasia orchestrates a clever plan. She plays her flute, drawing the rare rabbit to the clearing. Although the son briefly secures the creature, the sound of Anastasia’s flute causes the rabbit to escape, leaving the son empty-handed and his father furious.

Facing the Music

Determined to seize the rabbit himself, the landowner ventures into the forest. When he finds Anastasia, he demands the animal, but she turns the tables on him. As she plays, the forest animals surround the terrified man, forcing him to confront his own cruelty. Anastasia offers him a deal: she will call off the animals only if he promises to "give half of your wealth away to those who need it," including the workers he formerly underpaid.

A Transformed Life

Ultimately, the landowner learns to "face the music" and "change his tune." By sharing his riches with those in need, he finds a path to redemption that his greed had previously denied him. Anastasia continues her life as a musician, playing for all who will listen, whether they have "legs or paws, wings or claws." This folktale serves as a poignant reminder that while greed may lead to temporary power, true harmony is found through kindness and the transformative power of art.
