The Nuance of Subjective Effects

Cannabis effects are highly subjective and depend on dosage, strain, and individual biology. Sativa varieties are often described as having a "head-high," acting as stimulants that may enhance focus and mood by modulating prefrontal cortex activity. In contrast, indica varieties are associated with full-body relaxation, often described as feeling "in the couch," and can suppress activity in the amygdala and hippocampus. Despite these generalizations, there is no reliable way to predict how a specific strain will affect an individual; while some find anxiety relief, others may experience intense paranoia.

Creativity and Cognitive Performance

Cannabis is often associated with enhanced creativity, a claim the literature suggests is complex. Creativity involves two modes: divergent thinking (brainstorming) and convergent thinking (synthesizing ideas). While cannabis can increase dopamine levels—which may facilitate divergent thinking—it does not directly "turn on" creativity. Instead, research indicates that cannabis users often possess higher "openness to experience" and lower baseline anxiety, which facilitates the creative process indirectly. Thus, the link between cannabis and creativity is often a "spurious correlation" driven by personality traits rather than direct neurochemical enhancement.

Physiological and Hormonal Impacts

Cannabis use, particularly chronic usage (twice a week or more), has significant physiological consequences. It can alter speech production, characterized by reduced vocal effort and intensity (spectral tilt). Hormonally, smoking cannabis is shown to increase prolactin levels, which are "mutually inhibitory" with dopamine and testosterone. This can lead to reduced libido, altered sperm motility in males, and potential disruptions in the menstrual cycle for females. Furthermore, smoking or vaping cannabis is detrimental to endothelial cells, negatively impacting cardiovascular health regardless of the substance inhaled.

Critical Health Warnings: Pregnancy and Adolescence

Perhaps the most alarming finding is the prevalence of cannabis use during pregnancy, with approximately 15% of pregnant mothers reporting use. Given that cannabinoid receptors are "central to every critical aspect of brain wiring and development," such exposure is highly dangerous.

Similarly, adolescent cannabis use (ages 14-25) is linked to significant negative outcomes. Research shows that cannabis use during this developmental window accelerates the "thinning of the prefrontal cortex," the area responsible for executive function and planning. Frequent use in this demographic is associated with a four-fold increase in the risk of developing psychosis, schizophrenia, or major depressive disorders later in life. As potency levels of modern cannabis strains increase, so does the risk of these severe psychiatric outcomes, making early initiation of cannabis use a significant public health concern.
