In our modern pursuit of productivity, the concept of multitasking—the blending of at least two tasks simultaneously—has become a standard expectation. Whether at work, home, or school, we frequently attempt to manage multiple activities at once. However, scientific evidence suggests that what we perceive as multitasking is largely an illusion.
When we focus on a single, creative, or complex activity, the frontal lobes of both brain hemispheres communicate effectively. Conversely, when we attempt to execute two things at once, the brain operates differently. Each hemisphere manages a task independently without communicating with the other. Instead of true parallel processing, the brain performs rapid shifting, jumping between tasks in milliseconds. Research indicates that the brain only processes one task at any given time, despite multiple areas appearing to activate simultaneously. This process places a hefty demand on the brain's energy and effort.
As we increase the number of tasks beyond two, the cognitive cost becomes apparent. Our reaction time extends, errors pile up, and, inevitably, at least one of the tasks is likely to be abandoned. The brain is not truly "handling" several activities; it is merely juggling between them rapidly and somewhat inefficiently. This constant switching creates a performance bottleneck that undermines our actual productivity.
Multitasking success depends heavily on the nature of the tasks involved. Experts note that it works best when functions are not in direct competition—such as combining motor skills with language. Additionally, tasks that have become automatic and unconscious through repetitive learning, like walking and talking, are easier to pair. However, when tasks require the same brain functions—such as writing a text while engaging in a conversation—multitasking becomes impossible unless one of the activities is so deeply ingrained that it requires little conscious effort, like singing a song learned by heart.
A common cultural belief suggests that women are inherently better multitaskers than men. However, there is no concrete evidence to support this claim. A study published in PLOS One in August 2019 found no discernible difference between the sexes in this regard. When the brain is overloaded with various tasks, both men and women experience a similar, significant decline in efficiency.
While we may feel that we are being productive by juggling multiple responsibilities, the science is clear: our brains are not designed for true multitasking. By understanding that this is merely a rapid, inefficient shifting process, we can better manage our focus and prioritize tasks that allow us to operate at our full cognitive potential.
