Exploring the Uncanny: Three Camping Horror Stories

This podcast episode, hosted by John (MrBallin), presents a collection of three remastered horror stories set in the wilderness. These narratives explore the psychological and physical dread experienced by campers when the safety of nature is compromised by the unknown.

1. The Far Away Dock: The Breeding Ground

In 1994, a young camper named Mark and his friend Kyle became obsessed with a forbidden "far away dock" at a summer camp in New Jersey. Despite rumors—ranging from drowning hazards to secret tunnels—the boys swam out to the structure. Upon arrival, they discovered the dock was far from empty. After playing on the wood, they realized the structure was infested with "hundreds of these massive spiders." The boys were forced to flee, frantically pulling spiders from their hair. Mark later learned that the dock was a known breeding ground for "dock spiders," a species capable of hunting on water and staying submerged for long periods, which the camp staff had failed to fully contain.

2. Tripwire: The Unseen Stalker

In 2015, an experienced outdoorsman named Bob was camping in a remote part of Northern Oregon with his family. His trip was marred by unsettling auditory phenomena: "heavy footsteps" pacing around his campsite at night that did not belong to any animal. The dread intensified when Bob discovered an abandoned, ransacked campsite nearby featuring a "solid metal propane tank that has been completely flattened." After his wife experienced a terrifying feeling of being watched, Bob decided to set up a tripwire for security. Upon doing so, he made a chilling discovery: "there is another tripwire that's already been built around the outside of our campsite," which had been cut. Realizing they were being stalked by something that had terrorized previous campers, the family abandoned their gear and fled.

3. Laughter: The Enigma of the Backcountry

In the early 2000s, a teenager named Eben and his father were granted access to a private, gated hunting property in Georgia. From the moment they entered the woods, they noted an unnatural silence—there were "no birds" and "no animals." The mystery deepened when they returned to their campsite to find their tent had been meticulously collapsed, with the rods removed from the anchor points. That night, they were terrified by a disembodied, human-like "laughing" that echoed from deep in the woods. The sound moved closer, eventually stopping "practically right on top of them." When the father moved to unzip the tent, the laughter ceased instantly, as if the entity had realized they were inside. The two spent the night in petrified silence, leaving the property at dawn. The owner later confirmed that the property was secure and no one else could have entered, leaving the source of the laughter and the tent's tampering a complete, terrifying mystery.
