Solar projects on Earth are burdened by the costs of "permitted land," "battery storage" (to manage the night cycle), and the sheer volume of solar cells required. In contrast, space-based infrastructure benefits from:

  • 24/7 solar exposure: Eliminating the need for battery storage.
  • Higher efficiency: "One square meter of solar panel in space produces six times the energy" of one on Earth.
  • Zero land-use conflicts: Bypassing the political and environmental hurdles of terrestrial site selection.

Johnston estimates that once launch costs reach "$500 a kilo," which is within the projected capabilities of Starship, building data centers in space becomes economically superior to building them on Earth.

Addressing Skepticism and Global Security

When Johnston first proposed this concept, it was met with significant ridicule, with critics calling it the "dumbest shit" they had ever heard. However, he emphasizes the importance of "reasoning from first principles." To prove the feasibility of the concept, his team is launching the first NVIDIA H100 chip to space—a GPU "100 times more powerful" than any previously deployed in orbit.

Beyond the technical benefits, Johnston frames this as a matter of global stability. He argues that the "biggest driver of large-scale war is competition for resources." By shifting the competition from Earth’s "fundamentally finite resources" to the "near-limitless energy of our solar system," humanity can potentially avoid the "scourge of war" that characterizes resource-starved eras.

A Vision for the Future

Johnston remains optimistic, predicting that within a decade, the majority of new data centers will be constructed in space. His ultimate, long-term vision suggests that humanity might one day harness the full power of our sun through a "Dyson sphere." By moving computing infrastructure off-planet, we can satisfy the insatiable hunger of AI while preserving Earth’s environment, effectively decoupling technological progress from terrestrial resource depletion.
