To mitigate this risk, developers have proposed solutions like BIP360, which outlines a path toward quantum-proof encryption. However, Pysh and Edwards emphasize that the migration process is not a simple software update. It involves:

  • Consensus Challenges: Achieving agreement within the decentralized Bitcoin community is notoriously difficult, often described as a "mess."
  • Migration Throughput: Moving to quantum-proof wallets will require significant transaction volume. Given Bitcoin's 10-minute block times, a full network migration could take anywhere from 10 months to five years, depending on transaction capacity and the size of post-quantum signatures (which can be 1-20 kilobytes compared to today's 70 bytes).

The Path Forward: Advocacy and Hedge

Both speakers stress that the community must initiate these difficult conversations now. The risk of waiting is a potential collapse of trust in Bitcoin’s security, which has taken 16 years to build.
