📋 Summary

Life Updates: A Candid Look at Recent Experiences

In this bonus episode of the Qloops English podcast, host Andrew shares a "mishmash" of personal updates from his life in Seoul, South Korea. Ranging from domestic comfort to professional setbacks and new personal development goals, Andrew provides an authentic look at his week while encouraging listeners to engage with natural English.

The Joy of 'Starfishing'

Andrew begins by recounting a rare, restful night spent alone while his wife visited her parents. He describes the experience of having a queen-size bed entirely to himself, which allowed him to "starfish"—an expression he defines as sleeping by "spreading their arms and their legs out as far as they can go." For Andrew, this physical freedom was a welcome, albeit temporary, luxury compared to his usual shared sleeping arrangements.

A Professional 'Recording Gone Wrong'

In a moment of transparency, Andrew reveals that he recently experienced a major production failure. After ten years of podcasting, he "stupidly forgot to turn on my microphone" before recording a 35-minute episode. Despite his efforts to "salvage" (save or repair) the audio from his camera, the quality was insufficient for public release. After consulting with his coworker, Yoshi, he decided to scrap the episode entirely. While he admits it was a "bummer," he maintains a "positive mental attitude" (PMA), viewing the mistake as a lesson in double-checking his equipment for the future.

Replacing Habits: From Doom Scrolling to Japanese

Andrew discusses his desire to improve his Japanese language skills, despite his primary focus remaining on Korean. He notes that his previous trip to Japan was marred by illness, and he felt his language proficiency "really, really sucks." To address this, he has implemented a strategy to replace his "doom scrolling" on Instagram and Reddit with a Japanese reading app. He emphasizes the importance of consistency over intensity, noting that even at 40, small, regular efforts are helping him master Hiragana.

Home Ownership and DIY Challenges

Finally, Andrew pivots to the realities of home maintenance. He identifies a problem in his bathroom where the "caulking"—the "white rubbery material that we put between two surfaces"—has started to disintegrate. Concerned about potential water damage and mold, he plans to undertake his first DIY repair. Although he notes that he does not want to "underestimate the skill level" required, he is eager to learn a new maintenance skill to keep his home "safe and dry."

Conclusion

Andrew concludes by reminding listeners that consistent exposure to natural English is the key to fluency. He leaves his audience with the completion code "starfish," encouraging them to practice by writing example sentences in the Qloops community, reinforcing the podcast's mission of learning through storytelling.
