📋 Summary

The 2025 Seoul Marathon Experience

In this episode, Andrew, the host of the Q-Lips English podcast, shares his personal recap of participating in the 2025 Seoul Marathon. Unlike his previous competitive efforts, this year’s race was defined by a shift in strategy, focusing on enjoyment rather than solely chasing a personal record (PR).

Preparation and the "Dirty Carb Loading" Strategy

For long-distance runners, nutrition is vital. Andrew explains the concept of carb loading, a strategy used to fill the body with energy before a 42-kilometer race. While experts usually recommend healthy carbohydrates like pasta or rice, Andrew and his running buddy, Jimmy, opted for a more indulgent approach. After a previous experience where they were "really strict about our diet" and ended up with a disastrous race, they decided to embrace "dirty carbs." They visited a popular burger joint, ordering enough fries to feed six to eight people, and truly "pigged out" to fuel their bodies, finding a balance between physical preparation and mental relaxation.

Managing Expectations and Physical Challenges

Leading up to the race, Andrew faced health setbacks, noting that he had been "quite sick" and unable to train as effectively as he had hoped. Consequently, he had to "lower my expectations" and abandon his initial goal of breaking a PR. Instead, he committed to listening to his body and running for fun.

Jimmy, however, had a different goal: a "full send," a slang term meaning to put all one's effort and speed into the race. Unfortunately, Jimmy struggled with a cold, feeling congested and coughing in the days leading up to the event. Despite these challenges, both runners maintained their determination to complete the course.

Race Day Dynamics and Unexpected Drama

On race day, the atmosphere was exhilarating. Andrew describes the start as a "big festival" with thousands of participants. The race course took runners through the heart of Seoul, crossing the Han River and ending near Jamsil Stadium.

Early in the race, a moment of "drama" occurred when a bicycle was found abandoned in the middle of the street. Andrew had to perform a quick jump to clear the bike, narrowly avoiding a potential "human pileup." Despite this, the rest of the race went "super smoothly." Andrew found himself running in a pack of athletes aiming for a sub-three-hour finish, which he described as a "comfortable speed." He even had a "starstruck" moment running alongside James Hooper, a minor celebrity in Korea known for his adventurous spirit.

Conclusion: A Successful Outcome

Ultimately, Andrew finished with a time of three hours and three minutes, marking his second-fastest marathon time ever. Meanwhile, Jimmy managed to "smash his PR" by seven minutes, proving that despite the initial physical struggles and the unconventional "dirty carb" prep, the experience was a resounding success. For Andrew, the 2025 Seoul Marathon was a "10 out of 10 experience" that reminded him why he is so passionate about the sport.
