Empowering the Future: The Movement of Black Women in AI

In this episode of the NVIDIA AI Podcast, host Noah Kravitz sits down with Angel Bush, the founder and CEO of Black Women in Artificial Intelligence. What began as a personal curiosity to build a robot named “Usher” transformed into a global movement dedicated to educating, engaging, embracing, and empowering Black women in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

The Genesis: A Revolution Without Exclusion

Angel Bush’s journey into AI began in 2019, long before the mainstream explosion of the field. While researching robotics on “YouTube University,” she found herself attending industry events where she noticed a stark lack of representation. Despite the industry’s rhetoric describing AI as the “fourth industrial revolution,” Bush realized that for this revolution to be truly transformative, it could not happen without the participation of Black women. This realization led to the official launch of Black Women in Artificial Intelligence in 2020.

Moving Beyond the “Branding Problem”

Bush argues that AI suffers from a significant “branding problem.” Many people are intimidated by the field, believing that access is restricted to those with Ivy League degrees or that the technology is inherently untrustworthy. The organization’s mission is to “break those barriers down.” Bush emphasizes meeting people exactly where they are, whether they come from backgrounds in law, medicine, or television, and guiding them through the necessary “pivot” to enter the AI economy.

From Consumers to Creators

A core pillar of the organization is the shift from being a mere consumer of AI to becoming a creator. Bush challenges her members to “just build,” regardless of their current skill level. She highlights the success of their members in creating practical applications, such as a conference app, as proof that when technical barriers are removed, innovation flourishes. This hands-on approach is supported by the organization’s custom AI career assessment agent, which helps members identify how their existing passions—such as a love for ice cream—can be connected to emerging technologies.

Strategic Partnerships and Shared Learning

The organization has forged powerful alliances with industry leaders like NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon. When evaluating potential partners, Bush focuses on three key questions: Do you know the vision? Do you understand the vision? And most importantly, do you trust the vision?

Beyond corporate partnerships, the organization fosters a “shared learning experience.” Bush draws an analogy to learning a foreign language in school; she believes that by teaching mothers about AI, they can pass that knowledge on to their children, ensuring the next generation is prepared for the future. Their initiatives, such as working with NVIDIA on computer science projects and autonomous hardware, are designed to build tangible capacity rather than just theoretical knowledge.

The Future: Scaling and Sustainability

Looking ahead, the organization is developing new tools, including an AI-powered resume optimizer that utilizes the OpenAI API to help members navigate applicant tracking systems. Despite her success, Bush remains humble about her long-term goal: “I want Black women in artificial intelligence to be so successful that it no longer has to exist.” She views her work not as a permanent fixture, but as a necessary bridge to ensure equitable participation in the AI-driven world.

Ultimately, Angel Bush’s message is one of action. By encouraging her community to “just start” and move past the fear of the unknown, she is not just building an organization—she is cultivating a movement that ensures Black women are at the forefront of the technological revolutions to come.
