The Evolution of FP&A: Insights from Brian LaPitas on Certification, Leadership, and the Future of the CFO

In this episode of FP&A Today, host Glenn Hopper sits down with Brian LaPitas, Director of the FP&A practice at the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP), to discuss the transformative shifts within the finance profession. Drawing on over 20 years of experience, LaPitas provides a roadmap for how FP&A professionals can navigate the changing landscape of corporate finance.

The Changing Role of the CFO

LaPitas traces the evolution of the CFO role, noting that the title itself was virtually non-existent in 1970. The transition from "accountant or controller" to "CFO" was driven by three main factors: the increasing complexity of international financial markets, the emergence of corporate raiders (modern-day private equity) necessitating a focus on maximizing financial value, and the data revolution.

Today, the CFO has evolved into a "business advisor" who must be part strategist, part technologist, and part diplomat. LaPitas highlights that in modern organizations, there is an increasing trend of blending the roles of COO and CFO, often referred to as the "COFO" (Chief Operating Financial Officer), as finance leaders take ownership of operational KPIs and performance metrics to drive business strategy.

The Strategic Importance of Certification

LaPitas emphasizes the distinction between a "certificate" and a "certification." While a certificate represents a moment in time and completion of a course, a certification like the FPAC (Certified Corporate FP&A Professional) demonstrates ongoing mastery of industry standards.

With over 5,000 professionals across 80 countries holding the FPAC, LaPitas explains that the program is designed to fill the gap left by traditional MBA programs, which often focus on "high finance" rather than the practical, forward-looking decision support required in the office of the CFO. The certification requires rigorous study and, crucially, a commitment to continuing education—45 credits over a three-year cycle—to ensure professionals remain current in an evolving field.

Navigating the AI and Data Revolution

Addressing the buzz around Generative AI, LaPitas notes that the profession has moved beyond the "mysterious" phase of machine learning to integrating AI directly into financial processes. However, he echoes Hopper’s sentiment: "You need BI before AI."

LaPitas argues that the true challenge for FP&A teams is not the lack of technology, but the quality of data and processes. "It’s like having a Ferrari driving through a school zone," he says, noting that poor data infrastructure and security policies often hold finance teams back. He encourages professionals to focus on data governance and upstream operations to truly leverage the power of AI.

Advice for the Next Generation of FP&A Leaders

For those five years into their career, LaPitas suggests an "hourglass" approach: starting with breadth, developing deep expertise in the middle stages, and returning to a broader perspective as one moves into management. He stresses that FP&A is the "sexiest job" in the CFO organization because it provides unique visibility into the entire company.

His core advice for future leaders is to avoid being siloed. Because FP&A professionals spend roughly 70% of their time working with non-finance partners, he emphasizes the necessity of "storytelling" and communication skills. "We deliver finance planning analysis insight," he reminds listeners. "We don't deliver data—that's called a data dump."

Ultimately, LaPitas encourages professionals to "get out from behind your desk" and engage with the broader practitioner network. By attending conferences and sharing knowledge, finance pros can ensure they are not just reacting to history, but actively shaping the future of their organizations.
