📋 Summary

The Enchantment of the Kithara

In the ancient Greek city of Corinth, a musician named Ariana possessed a rare and extraordinary talent. She played the kithara, a handheld, stringed instrument that did more than produce sound; it captivated every living soul. As the narrative describes, when she began to play, she "plucked the heartstrings of anyone who was listening." Her music possessed such transcendent power that it could cause "children to drop their toys and dance," silence the nightingales, and even bring the natural world to a standstill, with fish in the sea stopping their splashing to listen. This legendary ability earned her an invitation from the king to represent Corinth at a prestigious music competition in Sicily.

The Treachery of Greed

Ariana’s performance in Sicily was nothing short of miraculous. As she took the stage, the once-restless audience fell into a deep hush. Her music caused "eyes to brim with tears" and "hearts to swell," leaving the crowd transfixed until the final note. Crowned the winner, she received a grand prize—an enormous chest of treasure. However, the journey home took a dark turn. The captain of the merchant ship, motivated by pure avarice, confronted Ariana. Upon learning the chest was filled with riches, the captain and his crew decided that the reward was far too great for someone who merely played "a couple of harp strings." They stole her treasure and, in a display of cold-hearted cruelty, declared that she would not be sailing home to Corinth, effectively sentencing her to the sea.

The Rescue and the Return

Facing certain doom, Ariana requested one final favor: to play her kithara one last time. The captain, perhaps sensing a final performance, agreed. As she played, even the sailors were forced to sway, and the gulls slowed their swooping. Upon finishing, she jumped into the sea. However, her music had already cast a spell on the natural world. A school of dolphins, having gathered to hear her "one last song," rescued her. They carried her on their backs, swimming in formation all the way back to Corinth.

Justice Served

Upon her return, Ariana discovered the captain at the palace, spinning a web of lies to the king. He claimed a "savage squall" had swept Ariana and her treasure overboard. As he spoke, the king lamented the loss of Ariana, calling her "the true treasure" and a "real gem." Ariana revealed herself, shattering the captain's deceit and causing him to faint in terror. The king’s guards subsequently recovered the stolen treasure, and the dishonest crew was held accountable. Ariana was appointed the royal court musician, but she never forgot her rescuers. She continued to play her kithara not only for the king but also for the "swift, sleek, graceful dolphins" who had saved her life. This tale serves as a timeless reminder that while greed may seek to silence beauty, the power of art and the kindness of the natural world possess a resilience that, like Ariana's music, can overcome even the darkest of betrayals.
