📋 Summary

The Porter's Tale: A Journey into Mystery and Intrigue

The Porter’s Unexpected Fortune

The story begins with a humble porter in Baghdad, whose life takes an extraordinary turn when he encounters a woman of striking beauty. Tasked with carrying her basket, the porter follows her through the market as she procures fine goods—ranging from "red and yellow apples, peaches, lemons and oranges" to "ten pounds of fresh lamb." His excitement grows with every errand, exclaiming, "Oh, lucky day! Oh, happy day!" eventually leading him to a grand house adorned with "ivory and shining gold."

The Gathering at the Grand Hall

Upon entering the house, the porter discovers two other sisters, equally beautiful, with faces "brighter than the sun." Their hospitality is lavish, featuring a "large pool of water with a fountain" and an evening filled with eating, drinking, and singing. The porter, initially a stranger, is welcomed into their inner circle. However, there is a strict condition: they must abide by the inscription on the front door, which warns, "For those who meddle in the concerns of others, the punishment will be great."

Uninvited Guests and Escalating Tensions

The atmosphere shifts as the sisters invite three "one-eyed dervishes" into their home, followed by the arrival of the Caliph and his vizier, Jafar, who arrive in disguise. The scene becomes increasingly surreal when the sisters produce two black dogs, dancing with them until the animals collapse from exhaustion. The curiosity of the Caliph is piqued, despite Jafar’s repeated warnings that "this is not the time to ask questions."

The Price of Curiosity

The conflict reaches a boiling point when the Caliph, unable to contain his desire for answers, pressures the dervishes and the porter to demand an explanation for the strange events. Despite the sisters' previous warnings, the guests violate their promise of non-interference. Their breach of trust results in a dramatic confrontation: the sisters strike the floor, summoning "six men with swords in their hands." The guests are promptly bound, facing the threat of execution unless they can justify their presence and explain their life stories.

The Porter’s Plea

In a moment of desperation, the porter pleads, "God protect me, oh lady, do not kill me for another man's sins." The women grant a reprieve to anyone who shares their tale, while threatening death to those who remain silent. The narrative concludes with the porter successfully explaining his simple origins as a hired worker, securing his freedom. Yet, driven by the same curiosity that led him into this predicament, he chooses to remain, eager to hear the stories of the others and uncover the secrets behind the mysterious sisters.
