📋 Summary

The Macabre Mystery of Leo Shui Chung

In early 1991, in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, a chilling series of events unfolded surrounding a local taxi driver named Leo Shui Chung. Initially viewed by his colleagues as merely an antisocial and aggressive individual—notorious for his obsession with using a "crossbow" to hunt stray cats and dogs—Leo’s behavior took a sharp, psychotic turn that eventually unraveled a gruesome murder mystery.

The Transformation of the Taxi

Leo’s colleagues at the taxi dispatch center began to notice him acting erratically. He transformed his vehicle into a makeshift shrine, plastering the windows with "Fulus" (yellow strips of parchment paper intended to ward off evil spirits) and cluttering the dashboard with multiple golden statues of Buddha. His view from the driver's seat was almost completely "obstructed" by these items. He was frequently seen sprinting frantically between his apartment and his cab, looking over his shoulder as if pursued by an invisible entity. Colleagues and police later observed him "mumbling" or praying, appearing to be in a state of constant terror.

The Disappearance of Mariko Eguchi

This behavior occurred against the backdrop of a high-profile missing person case: the disappearance of 23-year-old Japanese tourist Mariko Eguchi, who had vanished while vacationing in Taiwan ten months earlier. Because of the cultural norm where tourists often stayed in the homes of their taxi drivers, Leo had been interviewed by police. He admitted to giving Mariko a ride but denied further involvement. As the investigation stagnated, the city was plagued by eerie reports of "frantic" phone calls from a woman speaking Japanese, which many locals believed to be the spirit of the missing woman trying to keep the case alive.

The Supernatural Confession

Detective Lin Xiaoji, who had been conducting surveillance on Leo, finally ambushed the driver when he returned to his apartment. To the officers' surprise, instead of resisting, Leo collapsed in relief, thanking them as his "saviors." He was convinced that the police could save him from a "demonic entity" haunting his home.

Under intense interrogation, Leo eventually confessed to the murder. He admitted that after inviting Mariko to his apartment, he had propositioned her, and upon being rejected, he murdered her with his crossbow. He decapitated her and buried the body. However, the haunting began shortly thereafter. Leo claimed that Mariko’s severed head would chase him through his apartment, screaming "Why? Why? Why?" at him. This psychological torment was what drove him to live in his cab and surround himself with protective talismans.

A Lingering Mystery

When police excavated the burial site Leo described, they found only the lower half of Mariko’s body; her head was never recovered. The case remains a haunting legend in Taiwan, with many—including Detective Lin—believing that Mariko’s spirit played an active role in her own justice. Detective Lin even reported a supernatural encounter, claiming he felt someone "push him on the back" while investigating the empty apartment. Leo was convicted of murder and remains in prison, forever pursued by the memory of his victim's final, spectral screams.
