Guy Raz notes that using rockets to resupply the International Space Station costs approximately "$43,000 per pound of stuff" (about $20,000 per kilogram). In contrast, JAXA researchers estimate that a functioning space elevator could reduce these costs to roughly "$100 to send up a pound of stuff." This massive reduction in cost would revolutionize how we transport cargo and astronauts into space.

Current Testing and Future Outlook

While the prospect of riding an elevator 60,000 miles above the Earth seems like science fiction, research is already underway. Scientists at Shizuka University, in collaboration with JAXA, are testing the mechanics of space elevators using miniature satellites. These satellites are connected by a 10-meter cable, with a "mini elevator car about the size of a matchbox" traveling back and forth. This allows researchers to study the movement in low-gravity conditions.

Although experts predict an operational space elevator might not be ready until around 2050, the project represents a significant leap in engineering. As Guy Raz puts it, it is a way of "taking an elevator to new heights," promising a future where space travel is as accessible as a ride in a downtown office building.
