📋 Summary

The Triumph of Intellect Over Physical Might

In the latest episode of Circle Round, recorded live at Tanglewood, host Rebecca Shear presents the Southeast Asian-inspired tale "All Tied Up." The story serves as a poignant reminder that true strength resides not in physical stature, but in the power of a "big strong mind."

The Failure of Physical Guardianship

The narrative follows three forest animals—a Mouse Deer, an Ox, and an Elephant—who discover a tree bursting with "tasty" mangosteens. When the animals realize they cannot consume the entire harvest at once, they decide to take turns guarding the remaining fruit. The Elephant, being the largest, volunteers first, confident in his size. However, his confidence is quickly shattered when two "tall, hairy giants" arrive. Despite his size, the Elephant is a "pipsqueak" compared to these Titans and flees in terror, leaving the giants to feast on the mangosteens.

When the Ox takes his turn, he meets the same fate. Despite being a "brawny bovine," he is no match for the giants, who mock him as a "small fry" and bully him into submission. Both larger animals assume that their physical prowess is the only measure of protection, yet they are rendered powerless by fear and brute force.

The Strategic Mastermind

Unlike her companions, the Mouse Deer—described as "pint-sized and petite"—possesses a different kind of strength. Recognizing that the Ox and Elephant have "little faith" in her due to her size, she devises a plan that relies on psychological maneuvering rather than physical combat.

As the giants return, the Mouse Deer initiates her plan. She begins "yanking vines off bushes" and wrapping them around herself. When confronted by the giants, she fabricates a story about an impending "tremendous flood" that will "sweep everyone in the forest all the way to the sea." She convinces the giants that the only way to survive is to be tied securely to the mangosteen tree. The giants, blinded by their own greed and fear of the flood, "took the bait."

A Lesson in Resilience

The Mouse Deer systematically ties the giants together and binds them to the tree. Through her cleverness, she manages to "untangle" the problem of the fruit-stealing giants by literally tying them up in knots. When the Ox and Elephant return, they are "gobsmacked" to find the giants incapacitated.

The story concludes with a powerful moral: "A big strong body may be a mighty thing to have, but a big strong mind can be even mightier." The Mouse Deer’s ability to remain calm and analytical in the face of danger allows her to protect her friends and secure their food supply. By demonstrating that she could handle a situation where "a powerful pachyderm" and "a brawny bovine" had failed, the Mouse Deer teaches us that confidence and strategy are the most effective tools for overcoming obstacles. The episode encourages listeners to cultivate their own "confidence catalogue," reminding them that they are capable, loved, and possess the power to make the world a better place.
