📋 Summary

The Legend of the Buda Dog Market: A Tale of Greed and Justice

Introduction: A Lesson in Missed Opportunities

In the heart of Hungary, there exists a unique cultural proverb: "The dog market at Buda happened only once." This phrase is used to describe situations where someone misses a golden opportunity or fails to act when a chance presents itself. This podcast episode of Circle Round explores the folklore origins of this saying, contrasting the lives of two neighbors: the wealthy, arrogant Laszlo and the desperate, humble Vidor.

The Devious Scheme

Laszlo, a farmer who grew increasingly "cocky" as his wealth expanded, enjoyed playing tricks on those less fortunate. When he encountered his struggling neighbor Vidor, who was down to his "last penny," Laszlo decided to hatch a "devious" scheme. He fabricated a story claiming that King Matthias the Just—a ruler known for being "fair and honest"—had developed a sudden obsession with dogs and was hosting a "dog market at Buda" where he paid a "very generous price" for any dogs brought to his castle.

The Gullible Farmer and the King's Mercy

Vidor, desperate to feed his family, fell for the lie. He spent days "wrangling up every single stray" he could find, eventually arriving at the palace with a chaotic pack of dogs. Expecting a payday, he was instead met with confusion and ridicule from the royal guards, who told him, "The king isn't looking to buy any dogs."

However, the story takes a turn when King Matthias, having overheard the commotion and the story of Vidor’s desperation from his window, intervened. Recognizing Vidor’s plight, the King purchased the dogs, providing the farmer with a bag of gold coins that was "even bigger and more overflowing" than the one Laszlo had used to taunt him.

The Consequence of Greed

Word of Vidor’s newfound wealth quickly spread, reaching the ears of the conniving Laszlo. Driven by jealousy and greed, Laszlo assumed he could replicate the success by bringing his own pack of dogs to the castle. He arrived at the palace gates, herding his "miserable fleabags" and expecting to be rewarded for his initiative.

Instead, King Matthias, who recognized the "mischievous scamp" responsible for the trick, confronted him in the throne room. When Laszlo eagerly inquired about the dog market, the King delivered the final blow to his greed, stating firmly, "The dog market at Buda happened only once." The guards then escorted the humiliated farmer away, leaving him with nothing but his own foolishness.

Conclusion: The Lingering Wisdom

The tale serves as a poignant moral lesson. While Vidor was rewarded for his genuine struggle and his willingness to work hard, Laszlo’s attempt to manipulate a situation for selfish gain resulted in total failure. Today, the proverb remains a staple of Hungarian culture, reminding listeners that some opportunities are unique, and those who seek to exploit the kindness or circumstances of others will ultimately find themselves left with nothing.
