In the 20th century, public health experts largely dismissed the air as a vector for disease, focusing instead on surface contact and large droplets. Zimmer introduces William and Mildred Wells, a husband-and-wife team who, in the 1930s, established that droplets containing viruses could float like "smoke" in poorly ventilated rooms. Despite their pioneering research, their work was largely forgotten until the SARS outbreak in 2003 and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic forced a re-evaluation of airborne transmission.
