To solve this, the team partnered with software engineers to develop "custom machine learning models." These AI tools were specifically trained to identify the distinct call of the red-legged frog—described as sounding like "a finger rubbing on a balloon"—amidst the chaotic soundscape. This technological intervention allowed scientists to process vast amounts of data in "tens of minutes," significantly increasing efficiency compared to traditional, manual monitoring.

A Promising Future for Biodiversity

The project achieved a milestone when the AI models identified the call of a red-legged frog, marking the first time the species has been heard in that part of Southern California in 25 years. The subsequent discovery of a new egg mass confirmed that the translocated population is successfully breeding. Looking forward, the team aims to establish self-sustaining populations that will eventually allow for further relocation to other parts of the range, with the ultimate goal of removing the species from the endangered list.
